Westminster Abbey is internationally known for the dignity and magnificence of the great State occasions of this country. For the last one hundred years or so, the choristers have been separately educated in the Westminster Abbey Choir School, which is unique amongst Choir Schools in educating only the boys in the Choir.

With a unique location in Dean’s Yard by Westminster Abbey, the present Choir School opened in 1918, although choristers (who first started singing in the Abbey in the 14th century) have been educated hereabouts since Elizabethan times.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall and Governors will be looking for a truly remarkable educator who understands the value of the life-changing musical opportunities, the huge importance of the very best in pastoral care and the special qualities needed to prepare the boys for some of the most prestigious senior schools in the country.

Living and working in a community with an internationally renowned reputation for excellence, within such a magnificent setting, will demand someone who is exceptional.

The current Head, Mr Jonathan Milton, former Chair of The Choir School Association, will be retiring at the end of this academic year after 17 years, during which time the school has flourished under his committed leadership. 

The 30 pupils ranging from Year 4 to Year 8 not only benefit from an exceptional musical education in a Christian environment and a happy and supportive place in which to live but also receive a broad academic grounding. This enables pupils to go on to senior school as “confident, well-balanced individuals, able to take their places in society as good citizens and to form strong enduring relationships with others” ISI Inspection, 2015.

The successful applicant will be a committed Christian* who understands the complex needs of the whole community. They will lead by example and have an innate understanding of the values that underpin this great institution.
