Job overview

Interview dates: Thursday, 25th October and Tuesday, 30th October 2018

Accrington Academy is part of United Learning, a successful national group of independent schools and academies which share a mission to bring out ‘the best in everyone’ and improve the life chances of the children and young people in their care.

Accrington Academy is part of our Lancashire cluster with nearby school The Hyndburn Academy and with Marsden Heights Community College due to join later this autumn. Our cluster model enables high quality, bespoke school improvement and wider opportunities for both staff and students to work collaboratively. The Lancashire Cluster is led by our Executive Principal, Andy O’Brien.

Accrington Academy has a strong local reputation and has been oversubscribed for several years. We are a successful school, with expanding 11-18 provision, and the majority of students spend their entire journey with us. There is much to be proud of at Accrington Academy but a great deal to be done to ensure we achieve our aim of being a great school. United Learning is ambitious for the school as it builds on its strengths in line with our Framework for Excellence: promoting the best in everyone, powerful knowledge, education with character, leadership in every role and continuous improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a leader looking to combine the autonomy of running their own school with the benefit of working closely with colleagues across a growing, successful cluster of schools and as part of a national group emphasising shared practice and CPD.

The academy, which is housed in a modern, state of the art building, plays a vital part in its community, promoting the key values of respect, tolerance and diversity essential to ensuring social cohesion and high aspirations.

As Headteacher, you will need to model on a daily basis what good and outstanding looks like and demonstrate a clear commitment to the school and its community. Your expertise and enthusiasm for education and the difference it makes to the lives of young people will be evident each and every day in all that you do.

Accrington is geographically situated within close proximity to Manchester and the delightful countryside of the Ribble Valley and the Lake District. As a result of strong travel networks, the location of the academy offers colleagues the ability to live in the vibrant city of Manchester or the calm of local villages and small towns.

If you are looking for an exciting, challenging and highly rewarding role within a Group that offers a strong commitment to professional development, and have an unshakeable commitment to improving the lives of young people, we encourage you to visit us.

We are a popular, vibrant and successful 11-18, non-selective school. Our motto as part of the UL family of academies is “The Best in Everyone”.

In March 2015 OFSTED identified that we were a ‘good’ school. The cornerstone of our success is that students enjoy school.  “Students’ attitudes to learning are positive. Students want to do well at the academy”.  – OFSTED MARCH 2015

We have developed a culture of “hard work” and “dedication” from our students and staff alike, where high expectations and a desire for success are standard and everyone is proud to belong to Accrington Academy.

We believe that everyone at the academy can be outstanding and we seek to draw out the full potential in everyone. We do this by instilling the following values in all our students:

  • Ambition
  • Determination to succeed
  • Respect for others, ourselves and the environment we live and work in
  • Enthusiasm
  • Confidence
  • Creativity
