Our highly respected current Headteacher is moving on to another exciting role, and her departure coincides with a period of considerable opportunity for the School.

An exceptional, visionary Headteacher is required to lead and further develop our outstanding SEND Education and service development. The Governing Body is looking to appoint a new Headteacher to:

  • Lead and manage the School and new services on behalf of our charity to deliver great outcomes for our young people.
  • Continue to develop our outstanding provision in a period of growth and further development.
  • Deliver inspirational and motivational leadership and provide stability across the School
  • Play a major role in the further development of the post-16 provision.
  • Manage the budgetary challenges and change implications of new funding arrangements.
  • Oversee the development of a bespoke curriculum.

Stepping Stones School is an Independent Day Special School and alternative provision for children aged 7-19 years. Originally for those with moderate physical and learning difficulties, it now admits children with a broader spectrum of learning difficulties, including those on the autistic spectrum. The Ofsted inspection in 2019, once again, judged the school Good with Outstanding features.

We are fortunate to have state-of-the art school buildings with extensive grounds, which provide a stimulating, ever-evolving environment to meet the needs of all of our learners.

Our original Tower Road site is now our primary provision.  Two minutes’ walk away is our secondary site: Undershaw, which is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s former home in Surrey.  The facilities emphasise our pupil-centred approach. Our expectation is to provide an inspirational school in a historic location. Our vision for the future will also focus on supporting students to develop their employability skills.   The School has received substantial support from two charitable foundations: COINS and DFN. The School is a very positive and supportive community, with a motivated and cohesive staff who are very committed to the children and their families. As Headteacher you will be responsible for the entire organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with the vision and motivation to continue to build on the School's outstanding ethos and our desire to provide an outstanding education for all of our students. You will currently be a Headteacher or an outstanding Deputy with senior management experience gained in a special school. You will have a proven track record of successful leadership and school management. In addition, you combine extensive experience in developing the curriculum and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning with excellent budgetary management skills and a sound understanding of a Headteacher’s financial responsibilities.

You are an inspirational leader who will inspire confidence in others and be capable of working collaboratively with a wide variety of people, and be able to develop staff and provide sensitive support to families. You will be able to work effectively under pressure, possess physical and emotional resilience and maintain and display a positive attitude. You are a reflective practitioner, who is confident in making sound and timely decisions based on good judgement and fact. You have the ability to motivate and inspire students, staff, parents, governors, other professionals and the wider community. A commitment to safeguarding is essential.
