A Higher Level Teaching Assistant is required to join this rapidly expanding provision in the Royal Borough of Greenwich which meets the needs of young people with diagnoses of Autism and severe mental health concerns. You will have the skills, ability and initiative to work out in the community engaging with our young people through our outreach and transition programmes. You will have the tenacity and resilience to engage with young people who often haven’t been to school for years. You will ideally have experience with high functioning youngsters on the spectrum but more importantly will be an outstanding candidate with a can do attitude and the resilience to work with our challenging cohort of bright, energetic young people. You will also be excited by the prospect of working in a dynamic, forward looking environment where risks are encouraged in order to achieve results.

You will join a team of dedicated professionals who have worked hard to establish King’s Park, at a time when our success led to an accelerated expansion programme until we reached capacity in September 2018. Ideally with experience of developing your own programmes of intervention with students with Autism and mental health difficulties. It is desirable that you have experience working with young people with ASD using specific interventions such as TEACCH, SPELL framework and SCERTS.

You will have key responsibility for the transition and outreach programmes, working closely with our pastoral manager and deputy SENCO. You will engage with students in existing special and mainstream provisions as well as at home to support their transition into King’s Park and often back into a full time education.

We opened in a refitted building in May 2016 and currently have 53 students on roll at King’s Park in years 7-14.  We also benefit from being a part of the wider Newhaven School which as well as King’s Park includes the Greenwich PRU, NEST health provision and QEH Hospital School. The curriculum is developing to meet the social communication and emotional literacy needs of our cohort and covers a diversity of academic need from entry to A level.

We are looking for:

• Specialist skills/training/experience to support students with specific ASC/SEN needs

• A proven record of good  results with students of all abilities

• Preferable experience of working with students with ASD with experience of specific interventions outlined above

• Resilience

• Applicants with a full UK driving licence due to the nature of the role.

Closing date: Friday 18/01/2019

Interviews: Week commencing 21/01/2019

Start date: A.S.A.P.

Newhaven Pupil Referral Unit is a high performing and complex alternative provision set in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We believe in providing opportunities for students to become independent and well-rounded individuals ready to embrace all that life has to offer, removing the barriers to learning that have hindered their progress up to now.

At Newhaven we have an extremely effective team of dedicated staff to support the progress of every child, including specialist LSAs and HLTAs, Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and CAMHS link workers. Our most recent Ofsted report notes that Newhaven pupils “benefit from a committed team of professionals who enjoy coming to work. This is because they feel valued and are supported to work together to improve pupils’ outcomes”.

Newhaven has a positive "can do" attitude, believing that the sky is the limit, and we think creatively and innovatively to meet the needs of our learners and school community. Our examination results and student destinations are a testament to this.
