About us:

Westminster Tutors is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ independent sixth form college based in South Kensington.  Established in 1934, we have a longstanding reputation for academic excellence and we continue to outstrip our competitors in the DfE A level Performance Tables.  We remain close to our tutorial college origins and teach mainly at A level with much of that teaching continuing to be one-to-one.  The college is small and friendly, staff morale is very high and teachers find their work with us immensely satisfying.  In turn, our students are mature and committed and their behaviour is exemplary.

What we are looking for:

Due to demand, we are looking for an A level History tutor (part-time/ paid hourly) to join our team.  We are able to offer our part-time tutors very flexible timetables according to their other commitments, and there is a possibility of increased hours from September 2021.  Many of our part-time staff are also working on PhDs, or are actors, musicians, artists and writers.  Others have had high-powered careers in business, education or academia and now wish to teach part-time in a rewarding and stimulating environment.  The diversity and range of accomplishments amongst our teachers all contribute to the unique atmosphere at Westminster Tutors and provide a source of inspiration for our students.

The successful candidate will ideally be a qualified teacher, although this is not a requirement.  We place far greater importance on you having strong academic credentials and require a good degree/ postgraduate degree in History, as well as a proven ability to engage and inspire students aged 16+.

Please also note that you will need to be very versatile and have a strong repertoire of periods that you are able to teach: we teach all A level boards and offer all options. For recent graduates or History teachers at the more academic end of the spectrum this is both exciting and rewarding, but teachers expecting the same options/ periods according to a preordained scheme of work might find this kind of work challenging.

Our students have a very broad range of ability.  Additional experience preparing students for HAT and highly competitive UCAS applications would be an advantage.  Additionally, experience teaching A level students with SEND including specific learning difficulties and the autism spectrum would be an advantage.

Additional experience teaching Politics would also be an advantage as we are likely to have additional demand for this A level.

Coronavirus update:

We are currently delivering our A level and A level retake courses online but we will re-open according to government guidance, most likely in March 2021, and so you should be willing and able to teach on site when that times comes.

We are small, safe and socially distanced because we have elected to do all of our teaching one-to-one this year.  Our approach also means that we can seamlessly move to teaching online in the event of another lockdown.

We conducted a rigorous risk assessment and we believe we are able to offer a much safer working environment due to our small size and teaching approach.  Our current staff have also said that they have found our consultation process and covid procedures very reassuring.
