Job overview

Do you want to be part of a team that will help inner-city children to do the seemingly impossible?

Michaela Community School is an exciting new free school that opened in September 2014. A vibrant and energetic team, our intention is to transform the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world.

Currently, we have 480 pupils, years 7, 8, 9 and 10. As we are growing every year (840 pupils at full capacity including a Sixth Form), there will be a lot of opportunities for promotion and development. In September 2018, we will have 600 pupils. In 2020, we will have over 800 pupils, including our Sixth Form.

We want to hire a History Teacher, preferably with an interest or ability in Politics (although this is not essential). The expectation is that History teachers at Michaela will teach all 3 Humanities subjects to Years 7 and 8. Resources are provided for you, so this is not the usual Humanities teaching experience that happens in other schools. In a school where behaviour is superb, it is possible to teach well in this way. Beyond Years 7 and 8, our humanities teachers teach within their subject specialism. All of our pupils take the OCR Explaining the Modern World GCSE.

We teach a knowledge-based curriculum built on cutting-edge insights from cognitive science. Our teaching approaches have been influenced by ground-breaking charter schools in the American inner cities and we are driven by a desire to get the best possible results for all our pupils. Our tight behaviour systems ensure you can really teach. Senior Team run centralised detentions twice daily so that consequences are immediate and teachers are not chasing absent detainees. In October, we offer pupils and staff a two-week half term.

Thanks to how teaching is organised, you will see your classes every day. As a consequence, the relationships you can forge and the learning you can foster are exceptional. In history, we teach a chronological curriculum starting with ancient civilisations going right up to the present day. In geography, we ensure that pupils have a thorough mastery of British, European and world place before learning about geographical processes. And in religion, our pupils encounter the most famous stories in the Bible before learning about the major faiths. If you are naturally inquisitive about human culture, with a passion for passing it on to every child, Michaela is for you.

We don’t offer lessons in ICT, DT, Citizenship or take children out of lessons for intervention. Intervention happens in form time or after school. We believe in keeping marking to a minimum at Michaela.

The Humanities team have written some blogs about teaching Humanities at Michaela, which you can read here:

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 in Wembley, and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. You may have heard of us: our Headmistress, Katharine Birbalsingh, is often in the news saying things that others find controversial but that we think are common sense. In 2023, our Progress 8 at GCSE was 2.37, the highest Progress 8 in the country. Nearly three quarters of our GCSE papers achieved a 7 to 9 grade. We also got 94% grade 5s in English and Maths. Our A level results were equally impressive with three quarters of our A-Level exams graded A* or A, and 75% of students went on to Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, Imperial and LSE.

The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world by showing that a child’s home circumstances don’t have to be a barrier to exceptional success.
