Job overview

We are looking to appoint an Inclusion Centre Assistant.

Our Inclusion Centre is a key part of our behaviour strategy in reducing fixed term exclusions.  It acts as a sanction. Just as importantly, it gives students a space to reflect on their behaviour and develop an understanding of the causes and consequences of their actions.

Currently we have one permanent, full time member of staff, our Inclusion Co-ordinator, who is highly skilled in working with students on improving their behaviour.  We are seeking a person who will work with the Inclusion Co-ordinator on developing this provision and supporting the Co-ordinator to further increase their effectiveness by delivering small group interventions with targeted individuals.

We are seeking a candidate who can focus on supporting students who exhibit challenging behaviour to re-engage with learning.  This is a key role, working within a small unit.

We welcome applications from candidates with previous experience of working with secondary age children, and who have the skills, experience and ability to work effectively with students with a wide range of behaviour difficulties to motivate and inspire them to achieve.

The successful candidate will assist in tracking students’ academic progress, and securing high quality outcomes to ensure the work completed in the Inclusion Centre mirrors that in the classroom.  The successful candidate will have recent experience of working with challenging young people and will have the stamina and resilience to meet deadlines and work under pressure, within a very busy environment.

You should have effective interpersonal skills to be able to engage with some of our more challenging students and facilitate non-academic interventions and group work to identify other areas of need to ensure all barriers to learning are broken down.  You will recognise that children from all backgrounds make mistakes – and can learn from them – and that progress is not always visible or quick.

Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a successful 11-18 mainstream co-educational academy which has improved rapidly over recent years. We recently celebrated achieving a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating in our November 2022 inspection. The improvement in progress 8 scores from 2019 to 2022 indicates we are the most improved school in Gateshead and among the top 10% of schools for improvement in the North East of England.

We provide an exceptional programme of CPD for staff. We know this through staff surveys and our exceptionally low levels of staff turnover. The majority of staff who have left us have gone on to promoted positions. Staff are happy here; Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a good place to work. We have high expectations of our staff and students, but we also know our staff are our greatest asset, and we treat them with respect. We value the development of all our staff and you will develop further as a teacher during your time here.

Our next steps are to build on our recent achievements, and to improve the attainment and progress of our disadvantaged students, including those with SEND. We also want to engage more effectively with our community, and continue to expand our already thriving extra-curricular offer for our students. Alongside these aims, we aim to expand our sixth form further, by attracting applications from other local schools, as well as ensuring more of our students complete key stage 4 with the qualifications required for further academic study.

We are an academy at the heart of its community and responsive to its needs while also recognising that our students are increasingly part of a global community.
