Role of IT Network Support Engineer

Harrogate Ladies' College (HLC) are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated IT Network Support Engineer to maintain and develop the school’s IT resource for safe, effective use by pupils and staff.

HLC is made up of three constituent parts: Highfield (Pre-School and Prep) and College.  Highfield is for girls and boys aged 2-4 and College is for girls' only boarding/day school, ages 11-18.

You will have responsibility for implementing procedures and providing technical support in line with the school’s IT support service requirements, supporting and advising pupils and staff in the appropriate use of IT.

The IT Network Support Engineer will report to the IT Network Manager and will need to work closely with appropriate members of the school staff.

The HLC Network fibre connects the whole campus to our RM CC4 system of some 300 PCs and 21 servers on a VMware platform plus student laptops in boarding houses and studies.

The Candidate's IT Knowledge 

Essential:

  • Anti-virus, Spam, Firewall & UTM
  • Desktop hardware troubleshooting & maintenance
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Presentation equipment (whiteboards, visualisers & projectors)
  • Server 2012/2016 operating systems
  • Supporting printers & photocopiers (Follow-me solution)
  • Windows 7/10 operating systems
  • Windows Troubleshooting
  • Wired and Wireless infrastructure and topology

Desired:

  • HP Switches
  • Knowledge of backup solutions (Veeam Backup)
  • Knowledge of iOS/Android platforms
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Office 365 / G-Suite
  • RM CC4 network management tools
  • School MIS Systems (iSAMS)
  • Virtualised platforms (Hyper-V or VMWare)
  • AV experience (lighting and sound)

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Regularly liaise with the IT Network Manager to receive guidelines on tasks to be undertaken and to document and report back on work progressed.  You will be expected to be self-motivated and constantly strive to make the working environment better for everyone.

2. Implement procedures and provide technical support in line with the school’s IT support service requirements.

3. Manage and document appropriate records of expenditure, hardware and software, and of support requests and actions taken.  To undertake the documentation of the procedures to be followed in the case of maintenance, fault finding as required.

4. Be trained towards deputising for the IT Network Manager in order to cover for any absence.

5. Be ‘on call’ as first point of contact in case of significant IT failure issues; an equitable sharing of duties to be undertaken alongside the IT Network Manager.

6. Perform PC/Server/Infrastructure hardware and software repairs, upgrades and provisioning with the IT Network Manager.  Maintain other hardware found in the School; install applications and trouble-shoot problems including server/network related issues.

7. You will assist in supporting the schools VOIP system, wireless (Unifi), printing(follow-me), email (Microsoft Exchange) and virtualised network infrastructure (VMWare).

8. Perform routine tasks to maintain user accounts and permissions, including implementing disk space and printer quota policies and Internet/e-mail access.  Develop and maintain the school’s Intranet site (Firefly).

9. Follow relevant H&S procedures and raise awareness among staff, pupils and other users.

10. Plan, record and implement changes to hardware and applications; collate and interpret results of testing and advise if goods are fit for use.

11. Respond to support requests according to school procedures. Determine whether an immediate solution is both required and possible; ensure steps are taken to find a permanent solution if not immediately possible.  Prioritise work by agreement with the IT Network Manager.

12. Work to the School’s support service targets and note problems in maintaining service levels; track external support calls and report performance of external contracts.

13. Identify possible IT requirements and solutions.

14. Work as part of a team and adopt flexible working practices.

15. Attend relevant courses and actively seek to broaden knowledge and skills relevant to responsibilities. 

16. Make routine contacts with external contractors and suppliers. Advise and train individual staff and pupils; produce detailed help sheets and other documentation.

17. Read online and published materials about the educational use of IT as required for the efficient continuance of the post; attend relevant meetings.

18. Assistance may be required at certain times of the year for school productions and other events. This may involve helping out with sound and lighting. Some evening and weekend work may be required.  Time in lieu may be offered at your line manager’s discretion (to be taken at non-critical times) for these additional hours above and beyond the normal working practices. 

19. You may also be required to work some additional hours for one-off events such as Open Days and Speech Day throughout the year as part of your contract.

20. The post holder will be expected to carry out such other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.

Terms and Conditions

Working hours are 9am – 5.30pm (with a 30-minute lunch break).

Salary will be negotiable according to experience. 

There is a holiday entitlement of 20 days (plus Bank Holidays) per annum. After 3 years of continuous service this entitlement will increase to 25 days and after a total of 5 years of continuous service the entitlement rises to 30 days.  

The successful candidate will also be eligible to join the School’s pension scheme for non-teaching staff after 3 months in post.
