The King’s Junior School is delighted to be seeking a dynamic, motivated  KS1 teacher to join our dedicated and caring team. King’s is a warm-hearted, family and community-centred Cathedral School with 480 years of experience in delivering academic excellence within an ethos of tolerance, respect and outstanding pastoral care. This post is for maternity cover and initially will be for a fixed term from October 2021 to August 2022.

King’s Junior School is thriving with a growing School roll, having two-form entry from Year 1 to Year 6; however, we maintain our distinctively small class sizes which tend to be around 14 pupils at Key Stage 1 but with an absolute maximum of 18. The Junior School commissioned an independently-run Parent Survey in 2019, which showed that our parents were overwhelmingly positive about their child’s experience at School. Recently, King’s was voted ‘Independent School of the Year’ in Gloucestershire – a wonderful accolade after the hard work which our staff put into caring for the pupils through the recent pandemic.

General

Teachers appointed to the King’s School will be expected to be loyal to the aims and objectives of the School, to perform their duties in a professional manner according to the needs of the School, and to assist the Junior School Head in the smooth and efficient running of the School.  The ‘line manager’ for the teaching staff is the Junior School Head.

Teachers must, at all times, work within the framework provided by the King’s School’s policy statements to fulfil the general aims and objectives within the agreed School practice.

The working year is defined as term time plus five additional INSET days outside of term in any calendar year.  Teachers shall, in addition to the above requirements, work such additional hours as may be needed to enable them to effectively discharge their professional duties.  The amount of time required for this purpose shall not be defined by the employer but shall depend upon the work needed to discharge professional duties.

Teaching

• Planning and preparing courses of study and inspirational, dynamic and innovative lessons;

• Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in School and elsewhere;

• Directing and working collaboratively with support staff to ensure excellent provision for each individual pupil. This includes provision of planning notes and opportunities to meet and discuss pupil progress;

• Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to the development, progress and attainment of individual pupils and groups of pupils, internally and to parents, including parents’ evenings;

• Controlling and overseeing the use and storage of books and other teaching materials provided for class usage;

• Creating an atmosphere within the classroom and surrounding corridors that will encourage learning; this will include the display of pupils’ work, posters, pictures and artefacts;

• Teachers are required to teach up to 40 periods a week pro rata, carry out supervision duties, attend and assist with assembly, run a club after School, register the attendance of pupils and supervise pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during, or after School sessions. Newly qualified teachers receive the relevant remission in their first year for training and induction;

• Ensuring that both class and group teaching is appropriately differentiated and that the methods used, and the approaches taken, are fully supportive of this objective, take into consideration both cross-curricular themes and the hidden curriculum; 

• To provide cover at the request of the Junior School Head, supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available;

• Promoting and supporting the School’s extra-curricular activities programme;

• Attending School functions such as Sports Day, Speech Day, the Carol Service, concerts and the School play, fundraising events, Open Mornings and Open Days (including the occasional Saturday morning or afternoon) in order to promote the School and its activities.

Pastoral, Discipline, Health and Safety

• Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils in accordance with the policies of the School and safeguarding their health and safety; both when they are authorised to be on the School premises and when they are engaged in authorised School activities elsewhere;

• Teachers will be supportive of pupils who have specific learning difficulties; including dyslexia, dyscalculia and other special educational needs such as dyspraxia, moderate learning difficulties and physical disabilities.  Teachers will be sensitive to the pupils’ needs and make no comment which could be the cause of embarrassment or personal/emotional hurt to such pupils and their parents;

• Providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and pastoral matters;

• Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils; 

• Carrying out duties at the request of the School, to ensure the adequate supervision and care of the pupils; including break, lunch, after School and prep duties;

• Ensuring that, in their dealings with pupils, they do not put themselves at personal or professional risk.  Teachers must also ensure that children in their care are appropriately supervised at all times;

• Supporting the whole-school approach concerning child protection, pastoral care, the care and control of pupils, and behaviour management, this includes strategies for dealing with bullying and discrimination;

• Any other tasks or responsibilities that may reasonably be assigned by the Head of Junior School.

Personal Specification for a Lower KS1 Teacher

The successful candidate will ideally have the following:

Necessary Qualifications and Experience

• Degree with PGCE

• Experience working with Key Stage One children

• The School is fully accredited to participate in the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel NQT Programme. NQTs are provided with a comprehensive induction and mentoring programme which supports them in achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Desirable Experience

• Coordinating and leading a subject area

• An enthusiasm and passion for teaching at Key Stage 1 level

• Excellent communication skills

• Ability to relate well to pupils of differing ages and abilities

• Willingness to share ideas with colleagues, an understanding of and being sympathetic to other viewpoints and life experiences

• Conscientious approach to lesson preparation, setting and marking work and the everyday tasks of teaching and being a good colleague

• High expectations of pupils

• Readiness to be involved in the wider life of the School

• Friendly, approachable with a good sense of humour
