Founded in 1932, we are a highly successful, non-selective 3-18 British international school with a reputation for academic excellence. We currently have just over 1,200 students from over 50 different nationalities. The School has three sections: Primary, Secondary, and Portuguese. There are 480 students in the Primary Section.

Primary Section Teacher Job Description  

Core Purpose

To facilitate the learning of students and promote the effective development of all individuals in our learning community.

Learning

  • To facilitate the learning of students in a (or more than one) specific subject area(s)
  • To mentor and support students in their learning

Primary Section Phase Leader (Upper Key Stage 2) Job Description  

Core Purpose

To be responsible for the academic care of students in Years 5 and 6. To lead a team of teachers and teaching assistants to ensure all students are supported socially, emotionally and academically.

Leadership and Management

  • To be the first point of contact for the teachers and teaching assistants in their phase and manage the day-to-day running of this team, ensuring that there is consistency throughout the two year groups.
  • To act as a highly effective role model, in classroom practice and in relationships with students and staff.
  • To be dedicated to a culture of collaboration and excellence by supporting, motivating and empowering colleagues in their roles as class teachers or teaching assistants.
  • To act with passion, enthusiasm and integrity and to foster an open and enjoyable climate for all.
  • To hold student wellbeing and student learning at the centre of all decision making.
  • To be the professional learning reviewer for some members of their phase.

Strategic Development

  • To articulate a vision for their assigned phase, and to develop practices that reflect the ethos of St. Julian’s.
  • To work collaboratively with other phase leaders, subject leaders and the PLT to develop strong systems of academic care across their phase.

Teaching & Learning

  • To work with subject leaders and the PLT to ensure engaging, progressive and meaningful learning opportunities are provided for all students in their phase.
  • To work with the SSD and EAL departments in response to the needs of individual students within their phase.
  • Alongside the PLT, to monitor the quality of learning and teaching in lessons.
  • To develop and maintain opportunities for the development of learner skills and the 6Cs through the curriculum in their phase.

Student Progress

  • To monitor the academic progress of students within the year group using data available and using support and intervention strategies to support individual students as appropriate.
  • To work with the class teachers, teaching assistants, PLT and other primary colleagues to monitor the wellbeing of students across their phase (for development and support of the ‘whole child’).

Person specifications

Required

  • Experience teaching primary students (aged 3-10)
  • Experience in developing fine and gross motor skills
  • A recognised teaching qualification, for example, a PGCE or a BEd 
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Desirable

  • At least three years’ experience in the UK (preferably), or experience teaching National Curriculum for England.

The Secondary section attempts to nurture in each student a sense of self-confidence and happiness; students are encouraged to speak up for themselves and relationships between teachers and students are lively, engaging and stimulating. At the end of Key Stage 4, students take a series of public examinations (GCSE and IGCSEs).
