Job overview

Are you a great classroom teacher looking to have positive impact across young people beyond your own lessons?

An opportunity is available for a qualified teacher of Science to join our large faculty and take on responsibility for Key Stage 4.  The Science department are a passionate and committed team, ensuring high standards are maintained in a mutually supportive environment.  The successful candidate will be offered comprehensive induction into the Academy and into the role itself, taking on additional aspects as their confidence and understanding grows.

Science is very well resourced here at Northampton Academy, with large numbers of dedicated labs and classrooms.  We have three Science technicians and a large prep area.  The Science staff base is very big and helps accommodate a large and close-knit team.  Leadership within Science is dedicated to supporting teachers to be excellent in the classroom, removing obstacles in order to make this possible.  The successful candidate will be expected to benefit from, and contribute to, this goal.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school of approximately 1450 students, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'good' by Ofsted in all areas in February 2016.  Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION and AMBITION.  We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Kitemark.

The leadership of the Academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons.  To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons.  If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf.  Teachers at the Academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here.  In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally

Northampton Academy is part of United Learning, a unique group of independent and state schools working together to achieve the best in everyone. Our vision is to provide excellent education so that all young people are able to make a success of their lives and, if we are to realise this vision, we need to make sure we attract, develop and reward the key ingredient – you.

Northampton Academy is committed to equal opportunities and to the protection and safety of all students and adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share these commitments.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally
