Job overview

Are you a well-informed, inquisitive and inspirational teacher who craves the autonomy and freedom to run your classes whilst being supported by strong and encouraging leadership? Would you like to join a community of compassionate, innovative and inspiring people who all share the same vision for the success of the children they teach? Then Beech Lodge School has the ideal opportunity for you.

Beech Lodge is a unique school that caters for children and young people who are unable to realise their full potential in a conventional setting. Our pupils have a range of difficulties that mean they are unable to thrive in a mainstream environment - from Dyslexia and Dyscalculia to Social and Emotional Difficulties, Anxiety and School Refusal. Life here is all about being part of a close-knit and good humoured team who give each pupil the opportunity to be truly accepted, understood and supported. Our motto is ‘Great Minds Think Differently’ and that applies to our pupils and our staff, who really do take a unique approach to education.

Due to expansion and a broadening academic curriculum, we’re looking for an experienced Class Teacher responsible for a small class of Key Stage 2 pupils. As well as planning, preparing and delivering engaging lessons that meet the specific needs and interests of your class, we’ll rely on you to research new topic areas, and devise and write new curriculum materials using a range of different resources. Planning and running trips, managing your class budget, supervising and supporting the work of teaching assistants and undertaking pastoral duties – all are aspects of this truly rewarding role.

To succeed, you’ll need a good honours degree, recognised teaching qualifications and outstanding subject knowledge. You’ll also need to share our passion, match our outlook on teaching and thrive in taking an alternative approach to helping those you teach, with a desire to breakout of the status quo in mainstream education. Perhaps you’re looking to truly connect with pupils and reconnect with the main reasons why you got into teaching in the first place. Whatever your motivation, crucially, you’re highly motivated, compassionate, work well on your own initiative and are happy to commit to the ethos of the school and its pastoral approach.

As well as a competitive salary and attractive benefits package, you’ll benefit from being part of an inspirational community that thinks deeply about what they teach and how they teach it and where there is a strong belief in developing the full potential of all staff.

Applications must be submitted by School employment Application Form which can be downloaded from our website or by clicking the apply button below.

Beech Lodge School is a unique co-educational independent special school for children and young people who are unable to realise their potential in a conventional school setting.

Founded in 2013 the school opened with only 5 pupils in a small converted barn in Hurley. Over time we extended into a second building nearby and today we occupy wonderful spacious brand-new purpose-built buildings set in a beautiful tranquil environment with extensive grounds and state-of-the-art facilities for our pupils to thrive.

We fondly refer to our pupils as “sparky square pegs in the round hole of education”. We give them the square hole in which to fit.

At Beech Lodge we provide an innovative and nurturing approach to education for those children who require an individually tailored learning environment to reach their academic potential, build social and life skills, have access to therapeutic and specialist interventions and above all the educational tools with which to flourish. Our pupils have a range of difficulties that mean they are unable to thrive in mainstream, from Dyslexia and Dyscalculia to Social and Emotional Difficulties, Anxiety and School Refusal. We do not cater for children with violent or aggressive behaviour.

Attachment theory underpins our entire school approach with a focus on the importance of relationships embedded throughout the whole school community. Alongside pupils’ academic progress, social and emotional development is a high priority at Beech Lodge, and it is from here that Fagus, the UK schools-wide educational resource for emotional and social development was created.

The School’s last Integrated ISI Inspection (February 2020) from which our excellent work was recognised. Amongst the myriad of excellent qualities, the report highlights include: “Pupils personal development is excellent, “The quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is good”, “Pupils make excellent progress in developing positive attitudes to learning”, “Pupils’ behaviour is excellent, and a calm atmosphere pervades the school” and “Modelling of how to do things by staff is excellent”. The School also met all the standards of the Regulatory Compliance Inspection.

Beech Lodge was always intended to be an alternative school, a unique high-quality setting that puts the particular needs of our pupils first. We are very proud to have successfully achieved that aim.
