Job overview

Our current vacancy is for a KS3 co-ordinator of mathematics.

The mathematics department prides itself on having a well-focused enthusiastic team who are always looking at improving teaching and making learning fun for the students. There are a total of 15 maths teachers, 8 are full time and 7 are part time.

We have a total of 12 specialist classrooms equipped with an array of text books and resources. All rooms are installed with a projector and a desktop computer. We also have a bank of 32 Chrome books which are used on a regular basis with many different classes. We have wireless internet access throughout the maths department and subscribe to many different web sites including Mymaths, Mathsbox, Justmaths, Maths watch, and Kerboodle to name a few. This is in addition to having Autograph, Omnigraph, and Geometers sketchpad installed on the network.

At the start of Year 7 students are tested in the first two weeks and are then put into maths sets based on these results along with their Key Stage 2 results. Years 7-9 use the new Collins KS3 books. Students continue to be tested on a regular basis and these are used to grade students and to set them targets as well as monitor progress.

At Key Stage 4, we enter our students for the AQA GCSE exam. Generally sets 1- 4 are entered for higher and sets 5 and 6 for foundation. Students use a variety of text books and resources including Collins, Nelson Thrones AQA books, 10 ticks, Mathswatch and Mymaths. Each student is also issued with a homework book and revision guide. Assessments are set on a regular basis. To prepare for each exam students are given packs of past exam questions and revision sessions are offered after school to provide extra support. Last year 87.8% of our students gained grades 9-4.

We have a strong Sixth Form intake. We have almost 100 students studying A level maths and further maths in Years 12 and 13.  We follow the Edexcel course. Last year we gained 69% A*-B for A level maths and 87.5% A*-B for further maths.

Students are given opportunities at all ages to get involved in extracurricular activities, from master classes to university led lectures which enrich learning for the more able. We enter the junior and intermediate maths challenge run by the University of Leeds and regularly have students entered for the kangaroo challenges. Our Year 12 students last year entered the Surrey maths Challenge.  Last year 4 of our Year 10 students did very well in the Surrey Feast competitions.  Internally we run a Year 7 maths club every week, undercover maths on a monthly basis, as well as many intervention sessions for our Year 11, 12 and 13 students.

We are looking for a committed, hardworking and enthusiastic colleague to join the department, who can help contribute to the further development of the mathematics education and learning of the students at St Bede’s. Visits prior to application are welcome. Please contact us if you would like to make an appointment.

Why Work For Us?

St Bede's is a good place to work.  Staff are friendly and supportive of one another: relationships between staff and pupils were recognised by Ofsted as 'exceptionally strong'.

NQTs benefit from a well developed and comprehensive induction period programme.  More experienced teachers are given the opportunity to participate in training which will help them to develop skills needed for middle and senior management roles.

There are good on-site catering facilities. Staff are able to use the fitness facilities free of charge and to participate in sports activities.

Music is a big part of school life and staff are welcome to join our senior choir and instrumental groups.

We have a social event at the end of each term as well as occasional staff trips to the theatre.

The school is situated in Redhill, a commuter belt town in the Surrey Fringe area.  We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school.  We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside . Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.

We welcome visits prior to application (but appreciate that it is not possible for everyone to do so).  If you would like to arrange a visit please email jobs@st-bedes.surrey.sch.uk

St Bede’s is a good place to work. The community is vibrant, focused on learning and caring for our students. Staff relationships are very strong, supportive and welcoming.  Our students like the school and behaviour is outstanding. We have approximately 1900 mixed ability students aged 11-18.  This includes over 300 studying academic courses in the sixth form. Our GCSE exam results make us one of the highest performing non-selective state schools in the country reflecting the very effective three way partnership we enjoy; hardworking pupils, committed staff and supportive parents.

We welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced teachers. Whatever your level of experience, and regardless of whether you are a teacher or member of support staff, this is a school where you will have opportunity to develop.  Teachers in their ECT years benefit from an excellent level of support through mentoring and a full ECT programme.

St Bede’s is unique.  This is the only state-funded school where Anglicans, Roman Catholic and the Free Churches are bound together in a formal partnership to provide a common Christian education, which values the distinctive contribution of each tradition.  St Bede’s is a charitable trust jointly held by the Anglican Diocese of Southwark and the RC Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.  Staff can be of any religion, or none at all, but must be able to support the ethos of the school.

Our facilities are very good; staff have free access to fitness facilities and there is very good on-site catering.  Teaching and support staff have opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities and visits.  We are situated in Redhill Surrey with good transport links to both London and the south coast.  We are very close to beautiful countryside.  This area offers the best of all worlds!

Our school is committed to the safeguarding of children so all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Only applications made on our School Application form will be considered; we do not accept CVs or unsolicited testimonials.  It is our policy always to request references prior to interview.
