Job overview

The St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi-Academy Trust seeks to appoint a full time Lay Chaplain to work across the secondary school of Blessed Robert Sutton in Burton and two of its feeder primaries Holy Rosary, Burton and St Edward’s Swadlincote; as well as a day a week in the parish of St Joseph the Worker, Burton with Saints Peter and Paul.

This new position is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and practising Catholic to help guide children and young people in their Catholic faith in both a parish and school context. Their time would be split as two days in Blessed Robert Sutton, one day in Holy Rosary, one day in St Edward’s, and one day at the weekend working in the parish. There would be an agreed day off in the week to make up for the weekend day.

The Catholic Communities of Burton and Swadlincote in the Diocese of Nottingham have been joined for the last four years as one community; and they now seek to forage greater links between the schools and the parishes. It is the hope that the appoint of a Lay Chaplain will help empower the children and young people of the area to explore their faith more and take a leading role in shaping how this is celebrated in both the schools and the parishes.

This is a reserved post within a Catholic school and the successful candidate would need to be a practising Catholic. The Lay Chaplain would work alongside experienced and dedicated staff in each school in animating the Religious Education, Catholic Life and Collective worship of the schools and would have regular mentor meetings with the Lead Lay Chaplain of the St Ralph Sherwin CMAT to help them flourish in their new role. Their parish work would be overseen by the parish priest, who is also the Diocesan Coordinator for School Chaplaincy.
