The role

The Governors of this highly successful, over-subscribed mixed 11-18 Specialist Science College are seeking to appoint an exceptional Lead Practitioner of Mathematics. The successful candidate will be excited by the opportunity to share their love for teaching and learning Mathematics with both students and staff. There is the opportunity to teach A Level Mathematics, A Level Further Mathematics, GCSE Statistics and GCSE Mathematics.

At St Gregory’s we want our students to be the recipients of a world class mathematics education: all students should leave with the knowledge and skills to thrive in modern society, but also see Mathematics as both a useful and beautiful framework through which to appreciate the world. The successful candidate will drive this vision by guiding, supporting and inspiring staff across the department to help them to engage and enthuse learners of all abilities.

The ideal candidate will:

·     Be passionate about leading the development of the teaching and learning of Mathematics

·     Have a proven track record of outstanding student outcomes

·     Have a clear vision of what constitutes excellent Mathematics teaching and lead by example

·     Have strong communication skills and be able to inspire and motivate others

·     Contribute to and drive the Teaching & Learning culture across the school

·     Be able to lead curriculum development in the department

·     Have great references that demonstrate suitability for the role, safe to work with children

The school

St Gregory’s has been identified by OFSTED in March 2019 as an outstanding school in all areas of its practice; by the DfE as a National Lead Behaviour School and by the SSAT as a High Attaining School. In 2022 41% of all A level grades were A*-A, 79% were A*-B and 93% were A*-C. At GCSE pupils attained 41% Grade 7+, 75% Grade 5+ and 85% Grade 4+.

Mathematics is a very successful subject at St Gregory’s with a Progress 8 score in 2022 of +0.9 (school performance tables). Mathematics A level results in 2022 were 57% A*, 95% A+ and 100% B+ grades. The school is firmly committed to CPD and promotes opportunities for improving subject knowledge and pedagogy as well as career development within the school.

Effective safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils is our upmost priority. Shortlisted candidates will be subject to online searches in line with the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance. References will be sought and the successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check. A respect for the Catholic ethos of the school is essential.
