Job overview

Learning Support assistant - EAL (English as an Additional Language)

Grade 4, TTO – 30 hrs per week.

We are looking for a learning support assistant to support EAL students across the college. EAL students have varying levels of learning needs and require additional support to develop their English language skills and ensure they have inclusive access to the curriculum.

We are looking for someone with good literacy, numeracy and communication skills. You will need to be able to relate well to students who might be new arrivals to the country or who come from families where English is not the first language spoken. The role will involve working with teachers to coordinate and devise support and additional resources for EAL students. As well as this you will be involved with planning and preparing intervention work for supporting students in the classroom, in small groups or on a one to one basis.

A keenness to develop your skills and knowledge of working with young people with learning needs is essential for this role. Part of the role will involve monitoring progress of EAL students so some experience of interpreting and analysing data is desirable. Some experience of working with secondary age students would be also be advantageous.

The college is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure.

The full time equivalent salary is £17,681 to £18,319 per annum (actual salary £11,854 to £12,282).

Applications should be completed via the website using a support staff application form together with a short letter of application (no more than one side of A4) and emailed to jobs@oathall.org. Closing date for applications is 15:00 Tuesday 2 January 2019. Interviews will be held w/c 7 January 2019.

"Oathall is a large, happy school community" Ofsted inspection 2023

Oathall is a mixed comprehensive secondary school for students aged between 11 and 16.  We are situated on the boundaries of the town of Haywards Heath and the village of Lindfield in the heart of Mid-Sussex. The college opened in 1938 and has a full spectrum of specialist accommodation and facilities including well-equipped classrooms, a music centre, library, drama & dance studios, a fitness gym and a large sports hall. Outside we have large playing fields used for sport, a floodlit full-size 3G artificial turf pitch and a five acre farm. In 2022, we were told that Oathall was a confirmed project under the DFE school rebuilding progrmme. We anticipate the project will commence in around 2026-2027.

Our teaching and learning aim is simply to ensure the best possible progress and high attainment for every student.  We offer a broad, balanced curriculum based on our knowledge of our students that challenges and motivates students to achieve their best. Academic and vocational success is complemented by an extensive extra curricular programme. Oathall prides itself on its excellent pastoral organisation and inclusion policy which is recognised as an example of best practice. Pastoral care is based around a year group structure. We also operate a traditional house system, consisting of four houses, Discovery, Endeavour, Pioneer and Voyager.

Oathall works in a spirit of co-operation and industry with a deep respect for high standards of attitude and attainment. This, together with an excellent curriculum and friendly atmosphere, leads to the education of a first-rate set of well-adjusted and highly qualified young people. The strong and effective teaching staff, excellent resources and atmosphere of hard work ensure that Oathall children have the highest possible quality of learning.
