The school enjoys outstanding academic achievement, is over-subscribed and expanding, with over 40% of pupils coming from beyond the designated catchment area.
The Learning Support Department deals primarily with pupils with special education needs. Its role and prominence in the school has expanded over the last 12 years both in the number of staff working in the department and the children with whom it interacts. The school has a strong reputation for a positive approach towards inclusion, whilst maintaining high academic attainment and achievement.
A new SENDCo was appointed to the Learning Support Department in Jan 2018 and is building on the strengths of the team to make the provision for our students even better. The launch of ‘The Hive’ - our intervention room, in September 2018, opens up new exciting opportunities for our Learning Support Assistants to work with students. Currently we provide bespoke literacy and numeracy intervention at KS3 and KS4. Several members of the team have additional responsibilities working with autistic students and those that need emotional literacy support. The LSA team has regular training sessions to ensure all staff are developing their skills to ensure maximum impact for children in the classroom.
The department currently comprises:
- Head of Learning Support Department who is also the SENCO
- 16 Learning Support Assistants (some of whom are part time)
- Assistant SENDCo
The department is based within the Maths block with The Hive and a small dedicated teaching room, along with an office which also provides 1:1 working space and sensory / therapeutic zone. The department is equipped with 8 PCs connected to the computer network which operate learning support specific software and diagnostic tests such as Access Reading Test, Access Maths Test and Lucid LASS Dyslexia Screening.
