Surbiton High School is a trilogy of schools composed of a Girls’ Preparatory School, Boys’ Preparatory School and a Senior Girls’ School. The successful candidate will have a teaching timetable that could span both of the Prep Schools, as well as the Senior School. The Learning Enrichment Department is a busy and successful department which consists of 11 members of staff supporting approximately 200 pupils. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Attending INSET days

• Contributing to the organisation and running of co-curricular and enrichment activities

• Attending staff and departmental meetings as required

• Undertaking supervisory duties as required

• Conducting yourself in an appropriate professional manner at all times and supporting and fostering the aims and safeguarding policies of the School

• Participating in the annual performance review, appraisal and development programme.

• Identifying and attending workshops for professional development to ensure continued upgrading of knowledge and skills and attending relevant CPD training each year

• Upholding the School’s code of conduct and the values of Surbiton High School.

• Carrying out any such duties as may be reasonably requested. 

Entry procedures for EAL/International students:

• Marking OPT tests and assessing prospective students, making recommendations for level, curriculum load and EAL teaching requirements 

• Involvement with assessing Junior school international student applicants

• Liaison with Heads of Year as necessary at entry

EAL administration: 

• Ordering and continual update of EAL resources

EAL teaching:

• Managing schemes of work for EAL

• Planning and teaching EAL lessons for students in all three schools

• Continual PD to keep abreast of best practice in regard to teaching and examinations

Communicating with teachers:

• Regular communication with subject teachers as and when required

• On-going promotion of teacher awareness to the specific needs of EAL students particularly differentiation, as and when required

Pastoral and cultural:

• Liaison with HOY and Form Tutors in regard to pastoral issues for International Students

• Support the organization of an annual coffee morning for the parents of international pupils at the start of the academic year 

• Support the organization of a cultural trip for EAL (senior school) students each year

• Extra-curricular activities which promote understanding of other cultures such as organising assemblies (celebrating Chinese New Year) and International food fair 

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

• Possess a depth and breadth of subject content in either the Primary or Secondary School curriculum. It would be highly desirable for candidates to be confident and willing to teach from Year 1 up to Year 9

• Experience supporting EAL pupils 

• The ability to lead, inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues

• Have a vision for and the ability to translate the Surbiton High School strategy into  reality 

• The ability to work in a leadership team in a successful and dynamic School

• Excellent organizational, administrative and ICT skills

• A proven track record of delivering on academic performance

• Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels 

• Experience of leading and collaborating with colleagues

• Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives

• High levels of personal and professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality

• Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents

• Positive rapport with pupils

• High standards of personal presence and presentation and attention to detail

• Ability to communicate concisely and sensitively, both orally and in writing, to a variety of audiences

• A healthy sense of humour

• A team player with leadership qualities

• A reflective and flexible approach 

• Organized and able to self-direct

• Positive, enthusiastic and energetic approach to life, with a can-do attitude
