Job overview

Why Join Us?

In an exciting development we are delighted to announce our expansion into Initial Teacher Education (ITE), following the creation of a new specialism within our school of applied sciences and the launch of our new STEM subject Post Graduate teacher Training programme.

We are looking for individuals who have a strong background teaching STEM subjects within secondary schools and are passionate about exploring how to support teacher training in the future to address existing challenges within the sector. We are creating new programmes that meet the need of future teaching professionals through innovative and inspired pedagogical applied approaches. If you have a strong knowledge of the secondary education teaching qualifications sector and a background in the STEM subject areas this is the opportunity for you.

We want to offer our students something different to what is available currently; our aim is to develop a new curriculum that utilises strong links with Schools, Educational Authorities and Scotland's Science and Technology sector to truly capture the practicalities of teaching and understand the constantly developing needs of the sector. The exciting and potentially career defining task of designing these programmes will be up to you.

Our initial focus will be on a Secondary Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.  However this will expand into further subject areas (Computing, English and Modern Languages) over the next three years.

As part of this development we are now ready to welcome applications for three Lecturers in Biology, Chemistry and Physics subjects. This new, exciting role will be based initially within our School of Applied Sciences and will create and deliver the programme, including content planning, implementation, and launch of our new secondary level teacher education programme in August 2019.

Our School of Applied Sciences is recognised for the quality of its educational provision, the employability of its graduates, its international reputation and industry partnerships in specific research areas. Based at our GBP 60million Sighthill facility on the outskirts of Edinburgh, it is a hub for talented academics and students concerned with tackling global and local issues affecting health, society and the environment.

View our Applicant Information Pack for further information on our vision for Initial Teacher Education at Edinburgh Napier and what this opportunity could mean for you.

We will give you the autonomy to design our new, ground-breaking programmes in ITE. We will support you to work beyond the traditional boundaries and make entrepreneurship and innovation key to our curricula. You will work with others internally, across the school and wider university, and externally to foster an inter-professional, collaborative approach to educational delivery from the outset, and will have steer in recruiting further professionals to support our new programmes.

As such, we are looking for a strong teaching professional, with current secondary school experience in STEM, keen to be at the forefront of ITE, driving change within the sector to ensure our students receive an unrivalled learning experience, built on highly innovative and applied programmes.
Our ideal candidate will be degree qualified, with direct experience of teaching science and/or technology related subjects in the secondary education sector.

Essential to these positions is to be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.(G.T.C.S), a P.V.G. and a PhD would be advantageous.
