Job overview

The International British School of Bucharest is seeking to appoint an Key Stage 3-5 Mathematics Teacher able to teach A Level Statistics, to start August 17, 2021 (1st Day of Summer Induction).

Romania is without a doubt one of the nicest countries in Europe to work in. You have 4 seasons, beautiful beaches to enjoy in the summer, the last remaining mountain wilderness in Europe, a wide range of ski fields located just 90 mins from school in the winter, and many more sunny days than rain.

The capital city is clean and safe with a good public metro and tram system. You can walk around at night on your own safely and there is lots to do on the weekends. You have malls located throughout the city with all the western brand shops and restaurants you would expect, but at prices far below western Europe, so you money goes much further. Teachers are paid 5-6 times the average salary, so it is easy to save and eating out is cheap, costing around 15 euros for an entre, main, dessert, and drink, which is why many of our international staff eat out 3 or more times a week. It is also a place where you can buy your own apartment within one year of arriving, saving on rent, as many staff have done.

Romanians are a very warm and friendly people, well educated, with most speaking 3 or more languages. The students are generally above the UK average in ability and well-behaved, so teaching in Romania is a pleasure, with plenty of support from both the school and the parents - we are very fortunate to have one of the most supportive Parent Associations I have experienced to date, who for example organised a surprise morning tea for all the staff at the end of Term 1a this year to thank us for a successful first half term.

The International British School of Bucharest is an BSO accredited school, with AoBSO, COBIS, and CIS membership, last inspected by ISI in March 2018, and rated Good-Outstanding. We have just started on the HPL journey to world calss schools membership, with the school campus doubling in size over the past 2 years. In every way, it is an exciting time for everyone at IBSB, with plenty to look forward to in the next few years in the school development plan.

Class sizes are small, allowing for a high degree of teacher-student contact time and personal support. The school has a 65% Romanian, 35% international mix, with around 150 students in the primary school and 200 students in the secondary school. The teaching environment is personalised and friendly, with many successful programmes set up to support and extend students at both ends of the spectrum. Behaviour is excellent with little more for teachers to deal with other than minor low level disruption.

The staff environment is welcoming and supportive, with groups of staff regularly attending Wednesday Quiz Night and the traditional end of week Friday staff social. Staff also regularly head away on the weekends together and during school holidays exploring one of the many beautiful old Germanic-styled towns scattered across the Carpathian mountains, skiing in the winter, visiting the black sea coast in the summer, and taking the opportunity to use the low cost airlines to visit Greece, Italy, Turkey, and many other countries a short flight way.

Staff turnover is therefore very low at IBSB, with no staff leaving the secondary school this year (our current music teacher will be going on maternity leave), with only two moving on from primary. As another indication of the working environment, the average contract term at IBSB is 7 years, with many staff having brought apartments and houses, owing to the comfortable lifestyle offered in Romania, a country with 4 seasons, mountains, a beautiful coastline, and the ability to save a large portion of your monthly salary.

The successful candidate must be fluent in English, be an outstanding teacher, passionate about teaching KS3-5 Mathematics, able to teach A level Statistics, with a history of high grades achieved, possess strong classroom management skills, and have a minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching the National Curriculum of England.

A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Requirements:

•       Positive outlook on life

•       Good communication skills

•       Evidence of outstanding teaching in mathematics

•       Minimum 3 years teaching Mathematics using the National Curriculum of England framework

•       Ability to teach KS3-5, including A Level Statistics

•       Fluent English Speaker

•       EU passport holder preferred (but not essential)

Additional requirements sort, but not essential:

•       Previous experience teaching in international schools

Terms and Conditions of the appointment:

An initial 2 year renewable contract offers a competitive compensation and benefits package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
