Who we are:
We are a unique mathematics department with a strong emphasis on teacher development and support. All teachers observe each other within the department and meetings are frequently based on the growth of excellent pedagogy. With a senior leader, the Head Teacher and Principal teaching mathematics and a Lead Practitioner who takes responsibility for teacher development and supports teaching across the department; we are an extremely well supported and autonomous team. We pride ourselves on excellent practice to support student development. Our philosophy is that mathematics can and should be enjoyed by all children. Recent changes have included moving to mixed ability at years 7 and 8 and writing our own ‘mastery’ SOW. We are currently one of the lead schools in the borough for the development of teaching for mastery. We regularly host visits from other schools to observe the amazing work we have been producing and we were the subject of a recent NCETM article about how we are using collaborative planning to drive the success of our mastery programme (https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/53029). The mathematics department have consistently been amongst the top schools in the borough for progress since the P8 measure was introduced (+0.61 in 2018). Our A-Level results have also been consistently excellent with 50% A*-A and 81% A*-B in A-Level Maths and 54% A*-A and 77% A*-B in A-Level Further Maths in 2018.
