Detail: St Mary’s School has just 28 children aged between 3 and 16, and 6 teachers. The average class size is 4/5. The students are well behaved and have a very positive outlook on life and respond well to quality teaching.
Terms: Attractive package available including free accommodation and travel. Salary negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications.
Duration: 2 year posts with mid tour leave after one year.
The Maths and Science teacher will teach both subjects up to IGCSE level and will have an input into KS3 Science and Maths. The dedicated science lab is well equipped and there are supplies of chemicals for experiments. The teaching resources include an IWB, a projector, lap-tops for all secondary students, a resources library and an improving internet connection. Restricted bandwidth is a problem but there are plans to try and improve this situation.

Tristan Da Cunha is one of a set of islands in the South Atlantic, which are the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. The nearest populated land mass is the island of St. Helena, 1,200 kilometres away. St Mary's School is located on Tristan's only permanently inhabited locale, known as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1506, the islands have been a British territory since 1816.
The school is perfect for those wishing to work within an open and sharing community. Most of the working population are employed by the government with the fishing company employing some full time staff. Apart from their day jobs, islanders also farm, fish and work part time in the fishing factory. People are busy. The total population of the island is 260, ensuring small class sizes and close personal connections between teacher and student. Students are taught between the ages of 3-16.
First opened in 1971, the school has operated from its current campus since 1975. Facilities include five classrooms, a library, a hall with stage, a computer suite, a cookery room, and a craft/science room. School and community are located on the island's only patch of arable land, the rest dominated by a volcano that last erupted in 1961.
