Job overview

Teacher of Mathematics - for September 2018

The Mathematics Department is one of the strongest departments in the School. A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics are popular subjects. The department is an active participant in the UKMT Individual and Team Maths Challenges, with candidates from all levels often qualifying for the next round, as well as enjoying FMSP events too. The department encourages pupils to engage in Mathematics and strategic thinking beyond the classroom through a weekly STEM club and an AGT mentoring scheme for the Lower School. In recent years, one of our Year 13 students won the National Cipher Challenge.

We wish to appoint a suitably qualified and inspirational teacher of Mathematics to join a highly successful department. The successful candidate will have high expectations of themselves and of the pupils they teach. This is an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified teacher or for someone who wishes to broaden their experience further.  This post is full time and will mainly involve teaching classes in Years 7, 8 and 9. However, there may be some flexibility with this to suit the strength and experience of the successful candidate.

It is desirable that the successful candidate has the ability to teach A Level Mathematics but this is not essential. Similarly, we are happy to support professional development for anyone with the drive and ambition to contribute to the teaching of Further Mathematics. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a supportive and high performing department.

As a core subject, Mathematics is very well-staffed in the School with specialist teachers. In addition to the Head of Department, there is a Deputy Head of Department and other Mathematics specialists. The Department has a suite of modern dedicated classrooms on one floor; each has an Interactive White Board.

Pupils are set for Mathematics throughout the School, with set sizes ranging from below ten to twenty-four depending on ability. Pupils are well motivated and keen to achieve their best in this important and compulsory subject.

All pupils take the Edexcel Linear IGCSE at the end of Year 11, with set 1 pupils studying the Further Mathematics IGCSE course too.

A Level Mathematics has attracted an increasing number of students over recent years. Another set is dedicated to those studying Further Mathematics.

Further details of the School can be found on our website at www.stedwards.co.uk

The School runs the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. Lunch, plus tea/coffee and biscuits are provided at the discretion of the School during term-time. Free onsite parking is also provided.
