Job Description

JOB GOAL / PURPOSE: To teach trimester-long Design courses to all Middle School students, providing them with specific design skills to support project-based learning (PBL) throughout the curriculum.  To provide expertise and direct assistance to ISB MS faculty and students in the area of Design and related applications as they apply to our programs and program development.  To facilitate the development and implementation of design thinking and progressive pedagogy schoolwide; to work with staff and leadership on the development, articulation, implementation and assessment of elements of Design into the ISB curriculum in the middle and high school.  Reports To:  Jointly supervised by the MS Principal the PK-12 Educational Technology Coordinator.  The MS Principal will supervise the teaching aspects while the EdTech Coordinator will provide direction for the support of teachers in their integration of design throughout the range of MS programs.      Supports:   

  • Teacher understanding and development of Design processes into their curriculum   
  • Current programs and teachers working in the design program - Integration of design processes as new programs are developed 
  • Development of programs related to Design  
  • Culture of Innovation and R and D 
  • Professional Learning:   
  1. Conducts professional learning for staff in identified areas of learning related to design
  2. Identifies areas of professional learning for staff in order to continue to grow and progress in our teaching methods and ideas  
  • Co-plans and facilitates design integration at the building level with the other design/educational technology facilitators and teachers 
  • Any other school identified areas for growth or development (e.g. access to STEAM opportunities)   

Collaborates with:   

  • PK-12 Curriculum Coordinator and school-based Curriculum and Professional Learning Coordinators and on school-wide initiatives and professional learning for faculty and staff.   
  • Design and Educational Technology Facilitators to ensure the work is complementary and technology infused when appropriate. 
  • Middle school leaders on all aspects related to the design program.  
  • Business Office and Facilities personnel to ensure materials and infrastructure are suitable to support the integration of design in student learning. 

Develops: 

  • Programs with teachers to integrate design elements into their curriculum. 
  • Understanding of the coteaching model for the implementation of design elements into the curriculum  

Attends:   

  • Learning Connections Team meetings (Office of Learning Group)  
  • Educational Technology meetings 
  • Building level admin meetings as needed   
  • Faculty meetings as needed  
  • Curriculum and Professional Learning meetings as needed   

Engages:   

  • In professional learning to support their own learning and the various initiatives of the school.   
  • In positive relationships to continue the development, implementation, and assessment of the ISB curriculum and school-wide teaching and learning priorities.   

Accepts: 

  • This job description is quite likely to change within the initial 2 year contract, with greater emphasis on the facilitation of Design instruction and project work throughout the curriculum. 

Skills & Requirements

  • Experience in Design, Technology, and/or STEAM related fields.  
  • Classroom experience in upper elementary or secondary settings 
  • Ability to facilitate change processes and proven ability to implement pedagogical shifts into the instructional program 
  • Ability to collaborate
  • Strong knowledge of research-based pedagogy and assessment 
  • Awareness of adult learning theory 

 Specific knowledge and experience in the following is desirable:  

  • PBL, Design Thinking & other Design Processes 
  • Educational technology tools and approaches  
  • Digital Design and CAD for 3D printing/laser cutting 
  • Robotics  
  • Coding  
  • Electronics  
  • Graphic Design  
  • Engineering  
  • First Aid & Safety Protocols
