Job overview

The Sydney Russell School is looking for an inspirational teacher of Music to join its highly successful Music Department.   We are a school who is committed to the Arts, being a MiSST (Music in Secondary Schools Trust) school and a Barbican Associate School. Sydney Russell partnered with MiSST in September 2020, and from September 2022, all year 7, 8, and 9 students will learn an orchestral instrument as part of their music curriculum lessons.

The department is committed to running many ensembles, including the school orchestra, 3 different choirs, as well as String, Jazz, Percussion and Guitar Ensembles amongst others. There are many performance opportunities throughout the school year from termly concerts, to Carols Round the Tree, to FestivALL, and recital evenings. Our students have taken their performances to venues across London, such as The Barbican Centre, and The Barking Broadway. The school produces a fully staged musical each year to high acclaim with the latest being Grease in February 2022.

You will be teaching all key stages across our Primary and Secondary as we are an all through school.  The music department is currently growing and we are looking for someone who can help grow the vision of the department.   The school has been judged as Good with areas of Outstanding by Ofsted in December 2021 and has a record of obtaining examination results well above the national average at both KS4 and KS5.  You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of setting tasks for class, group and individual work, which challenge students and ensures high levels of student interest.  In return we have excellent professional development opportunities, a strong induction process and outstanding mentoring support.   We are a school that works tirelessly to raise standards and invests in the development of both staff and students.  The appointee will be committed to our high expectations and core values

Staff benefit from innovative behaviour management structures which ensure that teachers can concentrate on teaching. All lessons take place in ability-banded groups to enable work to be efficiently targeted at the right level of challenge.

We are committed the safety and welfare of all children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A fully enhanced clear DBS is essential for this post.

To apply please complete the on application form and email to recruitment@sydneyrussellschool.com.  Please apply by Tuesday 24th May, interviews will be held on Thursday 26th May 2022.

About The Sydney Russell School

An ‘Outstanding’ School

Leaders’ focus on improving teaching is relentless. Staff are managed so that they are constantly supported, encouraged and challenged to be better teachers – Ofsted 2013

As part of Sydney Russell’s continued growth we are seeking new ambitious teachers to join our team both on our Primary & Secondary School sites.

Sydney Russell School has benefitted from substantial capital investment since the school’s formation. It has excellent accommodation: In the Secondary school teaching rooms are arranged as departmental suites. There is a very large, beautifully-appointed Library/Resource Centre; all of the rooms in our newest two blocks are air-conditioned; a superb Leisure Centre has been built for the school to use during the day and the community in the evenings and at weekends. The Primary School is currently expanding with renovation work underway. The school is a 3 form entry Primary and will continue to grow over the next few years.

Ethos

The ethos at Sydney Russell in one of traditional values. We take a very firm line on discipline, uniform and good manners. We have moved decisively away from any mixed-ability teaching groups: all classes are in three broad ability bands, with some departments, such as Science and Maths using additional finer setting. On discipline, we have a centrally-organised reward and relocation scheme and school detention to take the strain off individual members of staff as well as behaviour modification groups in to take any particularly challenging students out of mainstream classes. Generous additional funding, through Excellence in Cities and other specific grants, has enabled us to provide further extensive targeted support in the form of Learning Mentors, a Learning Support Unit and additional support assistants.
