We are looking for a qualified music therapist to work in a large special school with a wide range of needs, culture and abilities. Preferred life experience and previous experience in special needs schools with complex needs, autism, and mental health. Awareness of online approached to music therapy and a willingness to engage in this way if required.

Whitefield School and Centre is the largest special school in Europe and has an international reputation for its expertise and resources within the special school sector. The pupils on roll have a wide range of Special Educational Needs.  In order to successfully address the children’s learning needs Whitefield Schools and Centre operates as three Specialist Schools - Sensory Impairment and Learning Difficulties (SILD), Communication and Interaction Primary (CIP) and Communication and Interaction Secondary (CIS).


The role

What you must have – a qualification in music therapy from an HCPC accredited course, membership of the  Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) | (hcpc-uk.org)  the organisation regulating all the arts therapists. Members of the British Association for Music Therapy: Home (bamt.org) and additional CPD experience in music therapy, autism, special needs and mental health and well-being. 

What will you be doing – working alongside the existing music therapist, you will provide music therapy assessments, individual music therapy sessions and group music therapy for pupils across the academy. 

Working alongside pupils and staff in classroom to enhance awareness and understanding of music therapy.  Where possible work with local artist and organisations bringing music into short term collaborative projects.  Support and/or provide music therapy training to parents and staff raising awareness of ‘what is music therapy’ and how we work here at Whitefield Academy.’ 

Attend and present your caseload in supervision to the senior music therapist at least once a month. Integrating those observations, you will provide reports to parents and staff on pupil progress with recommendations on how music therapy is to continue and when it might be due to end. Maintain your registration with HCPC and the mandatory CPD requirements.
