Job overview

The Head is responsible to the Board of Governors for the overall academic direction of the school. Managerial duties are held jointly with the General Manager who oversees administration and finance. The following characteristics are seen as essential for the new Head:

  • A Native-level English speaker with at least a working knowledge of Spanish. Alternatively, a fully bilingual English-Spanish speaker.
  • Previous experience as a Headteacher.
  • Previous experience working in Latin America and/or Asia and/or Africa.
  • Strong IB experience.
  • A genuine respect for traditions, combined with a passion for 21st century education.

The search process is intended to seek a broad range of eligible candidates with no a priori preferences in terms of age, gender or nationality.

In general, the successful candidate will: lead a process of continuous improvement of teachers and students; identify, based on best international practices, the challenges and opportunities at St George’s; define objectives and identify key results to measure progress towards those objectives; build and sustain a strong, positive learning culture based on shared values; build relationships across all sections of the St George’s community; become a key figure in the marketing of the school; and participate actively in fundraising.

Specific objectives at the Quilmes site for 2021-2025 are:

Objectively raise the teaching and educational performance. Identify key metrics to measure performance and quality of the pedagogical programme, define benchmark criteria and design a plan to become, in quantifiable terms, the leading school of its kind in Latin America.

Review and strengthen the teachers’ professional development plans. St George’s aims to always be the preferred school for teachers. Through improved development plans and an innovative pedagogical programme the school will attract the current and future leaders of learning.

Expand boarding by >100%. With the new co-ed boarding facility recently finished (an investment of over US$2M), the aim is to increase the number of full boarders and weekly boarders from the current 30 to the full capacity of 70 girls and boys. In parallel, we will raise the flexi-boarding utilization rate to full capacity.

Expand on the synergies related to the “One school, one philosophy, two sites” concept. Acting as a team with the General Manager and the Head of St George’s College North, identify and achieve significant synergies (educational, administrative, financial) between the two sites.

Develop strategic alliances with leading educational institutions. A stronger, active and productive dialogue is needed between St George’s and the universities where our students aspire to continue their studies.  The new Head will support the Board in identifying opportunities for cooperation alliances with the best local universities and expand on the existing exchanges with international learning institutions.

About St George's College Quilmes

St George’s College, Quilmes, Argentina is a private, bi-lingual, co-educational day and boarding school of some 825 students, which follows the southern hemisphere academic calendar, starting in late February and finishing in December. It was founded in 1898, along the lines of an English public school and the Headmaster is a member of the overseas section of the Headmasters Conference (HMC). The school has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate to offer the Diploma programme since 1984. St George’s is a member of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA) and of the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC), which groups together 42 schools on the continent of British origins and practices. St George’s maintains close links with the international community through student exchanges, besides overseas sporting and cultural tours and has 17 staff recruited from the UK and other English speaking countries.

The school’s Mission is to provide students with a bilingual education that integrates the Argentine and International curricula. We strive for the continual improvement in the quality of the teaching and learning, management and school resources in order that students may develop their potential to the full. Our environment nurtures individual development, independent thinking, sportsmanship and an extensive and close interaction with the community.

The School consists of three sections, Kindergarten (3-6 years), Preparatory School (6-11 years) and Secondary (11-18 years).  Each section has its own Head and Senior Management Team and these are responsible to the overall Headmaster of the School for the day-to-day running and strategic development of their section. Situated just 25 minutes outside the city of Buenos Aires, the beautiful and secure 27-hectare campus allows students to participate in extra curricular activities that are an integral part of our IB syllabus and school philosophy.  Whilst academic focus drives the school programme, attention is also centered on the physical, artistic, cultural, social and spiritual needs of our students. A further strength is the continuing commitment to high quality boarding which maintains the very special community spirit of this outstanding school.
