About Ysgol Penglais / Penglais School

Ysgol Penglais School is a very successful comprehensive school offering a high-quality education to nearly 1,300 students including over 300 in the sixth form. The school was established in 1973 and teaches mainly through the medium of English.

Penglais has all the advantages that a larger school can offer. These benefits include a greater range of subject choices at all levels, more specialist teaching and ancillary staff, and very good facilities.

Every student is supported by Tutors and Year leaders:.

“students adopt very positive attitudes towards learning.  Their motivation is evidenced by the consistency of their good behaviour and their ability to sustain appropriate levels of concentration”

The School has also built up a reputation for excellent care for those students with Additional Learning Needs, including a Learning Support Centre for those students with severe and moderate learning difficulties in north Ceredigion.

Great emphasis is placed on the quality of teaching and learning. Our examination results are consistently well above national averages and attract national prominence.

There is also a strong musical tradition at the School and regular opportunities to take part in musicals and dramatic productions. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities at Penglais including all main team games, many clubs and societies and a fantastic range of visits and exchanges. Field work and educational visits organised every year. The school celebrates the success of its students every December at an annual Prizes and Certificates Evening at the Great Hall in the university.
