We are looking for a highly skilled and inspirational peripatetic Music teacher who can offer singing lessons to students of all abilities, along with a 1 hour extra-curricular vocal group where you would be responsible for preparing pieces for performance as directed by the Curriculum Leader for Music. Where appropriate you would be expected to stay and help out with academy performances where vocal group material is a feature.

Role: 

 To carry out the functions of a teacher at Leeds West Academy according to the ethos and expectations of the academy.

Purpose of job: 

To assist the Music department in the delivery of effective instrumental provision within the Performing Arts area in order to achieve the Academy aim of improving the outcomes for all students.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

• To teach singing as required by the Music Department in group and individual settings.

• To set up and run a vocal group and prepare performances as directed by the Music Department.

• To encourage students to gain musical knowledge and skills through learning in lessons and through the experience of group music making.

• To foster the self-discipline and social skills necessary for music making.

• To enrich the education of each student through the provision of appropriate musical experiences and to provide skills that will serve the student for future music making, be it for leisure or professional purposes.

• To inspire a lifelong love and enjoyment of a wide range of musical genres.

• To teach singing to pupils from years 7 to 13, and prepare students for performance on GCSE, BTEC and KS3 music courses.

• To fulfil all directed commitments as required by the Music Department.

• To assess, in co-operation with the Music Department, potential students’ suitability for a particular instrument(s).

• To teach students in groups and individually as appropriate to the policies of Leeds West Academy.

• To plan and keep accurate records of lessons, student progress and achievement, keep accurate attendance registers and other such records as required by Leeds West Academy.

• To write student reports.

• To have and continue to update a thorough knowledge of teaching methods and repertoire and to be able to advise students and the academy about suitable repertoire and teaching material related to the exam boards used by the music department. 

• Within a holistic music education approach, teach and encourage good technique, posture and stylistic awareness on given instrument(s).

• To advise and encourage students to take advantage of appropriate musical activities such as choirs, ensembles, competitions and other musical opportunities.

• To prepare students, when and where appropriate, for the requirements of The Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music examinations, Rockschool and Trinity examinations (ensuring that all aspects of the examination requirements are well prepared and organised).

• To be aware of the individual needs’ of students by liaising with the Music Department and other Performing Arts Team members, as appropriate.

• To prepare students for performances at recitals, concerts, church services, competitions as required.

• To advise parents and students on the appropriate choice and purchase of instruments, music and accessories.

• To perform other such duties related to the job purposes as may be required from time-to-time.

Department Details

The Performing Arts Area Team is a highly successful faculty within the academy. The school is known for its performing arts work. Our Performing Arts facilities include:

• Industry standard state of the art proscenium arch theatre – the largest of any school in Leeds, with a semi-sprung floor

• 2 fully equipped Drama studios

• A large state of the art dance studio with full length mirrors, fully sprung floor, integral sound system and interactive whiteboard

• A high spec Recording studio

• 1 Music classroom with adjacent practice rooms

• 1 Music classroom with full Mac suite

• 1 dedicated peripatetic classroom with macs

Curriculum:

 At KS3 all students currently have one music lesson per week, and one drama lesson.  

 At KS4 we offer GCSE’s in Drama (Edexcel), Music (Edexcel, BTEC, Rockschool) and Dance (AQA)

Leeds West is a co-educational, non-denominational 11-16 secondary in the city’s district of Bramley. The school is a member of the White Rose Academies Trust. There are currently approximately 1,300 students on the school roll. The school is located near Summerfield Primary School and Stanningley Park. The school offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities from martial arts to chess. The school is also sponsored by Leeds City College.
