Job overview

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Physical Education and Games to join this hard-working and energetic department at Wellington School.  This maternity cover position becomes available in April 2019.

The successful applicant will be required to teach Physical Education and Games to pupils of all ages in this all-through 3 – 18 school.  SQA Physical Education is offered at both National 5 and Higher levels and the person appointed will be expected to contribute to the delivery of these certificate courses.  Coaching expertise and experience in either hockey or rugby is essential and all members of the department are required to participate in the programme of weekend fixtures that runs throughout the school year.

In addition to the facilities available for sports on the main campus, the school also has its own playing fields, with an all-weather surface and pavilion on the outskirts of Ayr at Doonside.

Wellington School is the only independent school in Ayrshire and the school roll is currently in the region of 520 (Nursery – S6).   Year groups in the Senior School typically consist of approximately 50 pupils and most remain in the school until the end of S6.  The majority of pupils study 8 National 5 courses in S3/S4, before going on to take 5 Higher courses in S5.  Pupils in S6 choose from the wide range of Advanced Higher and Higher courses available and almost all proceed to university.  Popular choices of course include Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Law.

In addition to its curricular provision, Wellington also offers a rich array of other activities and a willingness to participate fully in the life of the school will be expected.

The salary for this post will be in accordance with SNJCT scales, together with a small Wellington enhancement.  The position is full-time, temporary and commences in April 2019.

Applicants must either be registered with GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration. All teaching appointments are subject to clearance through the Disclosure Scotland Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme.

Applicants should complete the school’s Job Application Form, which can be found on the school's website at www.wellingtonschool.org/vacancies, and provide a covering letter, both of which should be sent by email to vacancies@wellingtonschool.org.  A CV is optional and may also be included.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 15 January 2019 and interviews will be held shortly after.

Wellington School is an independent day school for girls and boys between the ages of 3 and 18 years. There are approximately 540 pupils within the school, which aims to provide a friendly, orderly environment in which young people can develop and learn. The school is a place that operates on principles of courtesy, tolerance and consideration for others, and where pupils are expected to demonstrate a high standard of behaviour and to treat those around them with respect and kindness.

Teachers at Wellington really care for the pupils and do all that they can to ensure that the pupils also care for one another. As children grow up, it is important that they develop belief in themselves and the confidence that is needed to make the most of life. We encourage young people to show commitment in all that they do and to strive to be the best that they can be. The school’s relatively small size gives it a family feel and excellent pastoral care ensures that pupils receive first class support as they develop, both academically and socially.

Wellington offers a rich curriculum and pupils excel in a wide range of areas. The school has topped the league tables on a number of occasions for its results in SQA Advanced Highers, most recently in 2017. Pupils go on to study a wide range of courses at universities, colleges and conservatoires throughout the United Kingdom.

Founded in 1836 by the wife of an Ayr schoolmaster, the original school was situated in the elegant Wellington Square, hence the name, and provided education for twelve young ladies. The school moved to Carleton Turrets in 1923 and still occupies this splendid seaside location overlooking the beach and the Isle of Arran.  Wellington School has undergone significant development, however, over the course of the last 25 years and has transformed itself into the thriving co-educational school that it is today.  The school also has its own playing fields and sports facilities at the Doonside campus on the outskirts of the town.

Although Wellington has a rich history, it is a progressive school with ambitious plans. The recent acquisition of a residential property has unlocked the potential of the main campus and the school has embarked on an exciting programme of development to ensure that it remains at the forefront of independent schooling in Scotland.
