Job overview

We are looking to appoint a new Physics Consultant to our central team of subject specialists. We want to hear from qualified and experienced Physics teachers who have built a highly successful track record in raising achievement in order to drive improvement across the Federation. The successful applicant will join an established team of consultants and will work closely with the wider team of Physics specialists to help further raise standards within our academies.

Your opportunity

Our central team consultants are senior, highly visible within the Federation, and play a key role in working with Principals and Senior Leadership teams to support and help improve departments within academies. As a consultant, you will have an extremely varied and multi-faceted role involving coaching and mentoring, sharing of best practice, developing robust improvement strategies and helping to establish new departments or lead rapid recovery where required. The role of Physics Consultant is an exciting post providing enormous scope for a talented and creative practitioner to work alongside a team of highly experienced and friendly Physics practitioners with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

The Federation operates twin Teaching Schools as well as a number of highly successful CPD Networks, an Outstanding School Direct teacher training programme and a range of NPQ courses, all of which the successful applicant has the chance to be involved with. As a senior leader, you will have the opportunity to develop and advance your career within a Federation established in developing practitioners and nurturing excellent future leaders. You will have unrivalled opportunities for progression; whatever your aspirations as a senior leader, our Teaching School Alliance provides a range of bespoke courses and qualifications, including our Aspiring Leaders NPQSL and NPQH programmes to help you achieve your ambitions more quickly.

Who we are looking for:

We are interested to hear from qualified Physics practitioners who are experienced middle leaders, passionate about Physics, have the ability to work collaboratively both within teams and a cluster of academies, and have the motivation to help drive improvements. Ideally, we are looking for someone who has gained several years management experience, or who is an aspiring senior leader. Our consultant roles are suitable for those with management experience (ideally but not necessarily at Head of Department level or alternatively as an aspirant Leading Practitioner). The successful applicant should poses leadership qualities, have experience in designing a highly engaging Physics curriculum, delivering fun and exciting lessons and exposure to working with industry contacts through networking, events and projects.

The post would suit an ambitious middle leader looking either to broaden their subject expertise and responsibilities, or who maybe considering a future leadership pathway to their first headship. Although based at the Harris Federation offices close to East Croydon Station (with fast access to central London and the M25), the role will mostly be located within the academies.

We look for talented individuals who want to be a part of transforming education in London, and helping create exceptional places of learning. The successful applicant will be resilient, creative and a dynamic practitioner, and must hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant degree. You will be fully supported through a comprehensive Induction Programme both within and across the Harris Federation.

What you will need:

  • QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
  • At least 5 years' teaching experience, and at least two years in a management role
  • The ability to teach Physics to A-Level

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.
