Job overview

We are looking for a talented pianist and enthusiastic educator to teach 6 – 13 year olds, joining our team of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers. As well as teaching individual piano lessons there are also opportunities to accompany choir and senior pupils in concerts and exams.

Ideally you would have experience of working with Prep school children and preparing children successfully for ABRSM/Trinity exams.

To start with, a day and a half’s teaching is available per week, from January or April 2020.

Our Music Department at Cumnor has been recently refurbished, providing an attractive and exciting space for children to be in. We also have a 300-seat theatre in which larger concerts and productions take place. Music is taught, from nursery to Y8, by 23 specialist musicians teaching approximately 160 lessons a week. All children in Y2, 3 and 4 learn the recorder and how to read music, and children in Y3 are offered a free term’s group tuition on violin or cello.

Concerts are arranged at regular intervals to give the children the opportunity to perform. These vary from relaxed coffee concerts, to instrument-specific concerts (Piano concert each October) and the big Summer Serenade in which approximately 130 children perform.

Cumnor House Sussex is a happy and prosperous independent prep school of some 350 pupils, with a reputation for strong support of all Performing Arts.  The Music Department and the teaching staff in general are very supportive of the VMT’s, and the wonderful grounds and superb free dining room combine to make it a very pleasant place to work. The rate of pay is £42 per hour.

Cumnor House Sussex is an equal opportunities employer, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful applicant will be required to undertake an enhanced criminal record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Applicants are asked to request an application form or to send their Curriculum Vitae with a covering letter to the HR Manager, Teresa Mockridge, via email: tmockridge@cumnor.co.uk
