Job overview
Leicester Grammar School is one of the UK's top-performing co-educational HMC independent day schools. We are looking to appoint a self-employed piano teacher from January 2020, or earlier if possible.
This appointment is seen as key to the underpinning of the musical literacy, development and high aspirations of our young musicians. Successful applicants for the role will be committed teachers across the age and ability range and be keen to introduce pupils to the piano for the first time. Instrumental lessons in the Music Department at the School are available to around 1200 pupils, including pupils at the Junior School (Reception - Year 6). It is envisaged that the majority of the demand for lessons will come from the Junior School in the first instance.
This academic year, the waiting list of piano pupils has grown to around 20. There is thus an opportunity for a piano teacher to develop for themselves a role that, in time, could also include accompanying and chamber music coaching. It is hoped that the successful applicant will see themselves as being responsible for generating further demand for piano lessons.
Visiting Music Teachers at the Leicester Grammar School Trust (comprising of Leicester Grammar School, Leicester Grammar Junior School and Stoneygate School) are self-employed and as such bill parents directly for lessons, providing their own contracts. Charges to parents are agreed annually by the Visiting Instrumental Teachers in discussion with the Trust and are currently £39.50 per hour. Whilst the demand for piano lessons is currently high, the Trust does not guarantee a particular number of pupils for each teacher.
In the main, piano teachers coordinate among themselves which pupils are allocated to each teacher, if necessary consulting with the Director of Music, John Barker
Candidates are invited to apply by submitting a CV and covering letter addressed to Mr John Barker, Director of Music. Applications should be sent via email to Mrs Erica Parsons, HR Administrator, parsonse@leicestergrammar.org.uk
Those invited to interview will then be asked to complete a LGS Trust application form.
- Closing date for applications is midday on Tuesday 22 October 2019
- Interviews will be held week commencing 29 October 2019
Leicester Grammar School is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children. The appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Agency check.
