Job overview

The Grammar School at Leeds has an exciting opportunity available for a highly experienced, inspirational and ambitious music teacher to join our Junior School from January 2019.

The successful applicant will be joining the school at an exciting time in its development. Working with both talented young musicians and those new to  music, you will inspire pupils to love the subject, take up instruments and join our many groups and ensembles.

Our stunning purpose built Junior School caters for boys and girls from 7-11 and on the same site as the senior school.   With five forms in each year, GSAL Juniors is one of the largest of its kind (c. 400 pupils), yet we retain an intimate, supportive and caring environment, with the focus strongly upon academic excellence and high expectations for the progress of each child.

The curriculum of the Junior School is both broad and demanding. The national curriculum is not slavishly followed but is incorporated into the School’s scheme of work. There is a wide range of extracurricular activities offered within the Junior School, including music, sport and drama. There are several specialist teachers delivering their subject across the Key Stage in MFL, Science, Music, PE and games.

In 2020 our junior school (KS2) will join with our infant section, currently at Rose Court to become a combined primary school of around 700 pupils on the Alwoodley site. In the lead up to that point we will be looking to recruit an overall Head of Primary Music capable of leading an excellent provision across the 3 to 11 age range.

Our successful candidate will be able to lead their classes forward through excellent teaching resulting in first-class learning. They will be committed to the success of their pupils across the ability range and will demonstrate outstanding pastoral care.

We offer the chance to work in facilities unrivalled in the north of England, wonderful children and being part of a high achieving and professional team. There are also a range of non contractual benefits available including salary sacrifice schemes and access to the school gym and pool.

Full details of the post are shown in the job description and person specification on the school’s website www.gsal.org.uk

Application is by completion of the online GSAL application form.

Closing date: 9am on Monday 8 October 2018

Interviews will be held on: Monday 15 October 2018

(Please note that the job location map shows our Pre-prep school based in Headingley. This role is based at Alwoodley Gates, Leeds 17).

GSAL is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and an enhanced DBS disclosure will be required.

GSAL is an equal opportunities employer, selecting employees solely on merit irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation or age.

The Grammar School at Leeds is one of the UK’s leading independent, co-educational schools for pupils aged 3 to 18, incorporating Rose Court Nursery & Pre-Prep School and our Junior School. This is a selective, fee-charging day school. Some means-tested bursaries are available for entry at age 11+ and occasionally 16+. The Grammar School at Leeds is the result of a merger between Leeds Girls’ High School and Leeds Grammar School and it enjoys the heritage of both schools with a lineage traceable back to 1552 with a long history of academic excellence. It benefits from a magnificent site on the outskirts of the north of Leeds.
