Job overview

Franklin College is located on an attractive campus in North East Lincolnshire, close to Grimsby town centre, with a direct commute from much of the North East, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.  The well respected academic Sixth Form College has been providing high quality education in the area for over 25 years.

During 2016 there were 2,100 students on roll, of which over 1,600 were 16-19, predominantly on Level 3 courses. The local education context is complex and diverse; all secondary schools within the immediate area are now self-governing Academies and Lincolnshire also has a range of selective grammar schools. Within the area, there is the full mix of Further Education providers including an FE College with growing HE provision as well as selective school sixth forms.

Franklin offers the widest range of A Levels, BTECs, CTECs and GCSEs in the area, and every year, about 90% of Franklin College students who apply for higher education gain a place at their first-choice university, with a significant number achieving places within Russell Group establishments. The College has close relationships with the Universities of Hull and Lincoln and is an Associate College of both. Students who choose a more vocational route gain well respected apprenticeships with national and local providers and others go into employment. The College plays an important role in the community and works with local and national companies, clubs, societies and charities to provide a very wide range of student enrichment and employment opportunities. Franklin is delighted with the long tradition of students achieving excellent results and leaving College ready to take the next step in their career path.

The College is well-resourced to meet the needs of all students, with subjects being taught in areas specifically designed to meet the requirements of post-16 study.  Over £6 million has been invested in our buildings and facilities in recent years - without incurring any bank borrowings. Franklin is proud to support Equality, Diversity and Inclusion among students and staff - the College has attained Investors in Diversity status.

Franklin College Governors are seeking to appoint someone with outstanding drive, commitment and enthusiasm to lead the College in the next phase of its development upon the retirement of our current Principal, Trevor Wray. The ideal candidate will be a senior leader in a Sixth Form College, a General FE College with a good understanding of 16-18 education, or a school with a substantial Sixth Form. Franklin’s new and nationally significant Sixth Form College partnership means that this role has the breadth and scope to offer excellent career satisfaction to an existing Principal or Head seeking a fresh challenge, whilst our staff and systems will ensure that a successful and motivated Deputy, Vice Principal or Deputy Head will be capable of achieving great things in Franklin.

The College has worked in partnership with the other Sixth Form Colleges in the Humber area to establish the innovative ‘Venn4 Federation’. This exciting partnership enables the four Colleges to form a federated structure to promote and support collaboration, whilst retaining their individual character and independence as incorporated Sixth Form Colleges. The successful candidate, together with Colleague Principals from the other three Colleges, will take a strategic lead on the future direction, result and success of the Venn4 Partnership.

The College Governors envisage that the successful candidate will have a strong current knowledge of national and local issues in the sixth form sector and the ability and personality to work co-operatively with our stakeholders at all levels.  The College’s current OfSTED grade (‘3’ – RI) is a disappointment, but all staff and Governors are committed to a speedy return to ‘Good’ with the intention to progress to ‘Outstanding’ as soon as possible.

Franklin is a member of the Sixth Form Colleges Association and the Association of Colleges. Regionally the College works with Norvic (Northern Sixth Form Colleges Federation) for the purposes of development and mutual support.

We are the Sixth Form College of choice for more than 2,000 students….come and join in our success.

Closing date for receipt of applications: 11pm, 2nd October 2017.

Shortlisting will take place as soon as possible thereafter.

Interviews are likely to take place during week commencing 9th October 2017.

In 2020, Franklin will celebrate its thirtieth birthday by continuing to celebrate the fantastic achievements made by our students and the contribution they make to the area and to the country.

Franklin is, first and foremost, a college for our community. In 2018 OFSTED recognised the college as ‘embedded within its local community and creating an environment in which young people thrive’.

Our students go on to do great things, and we are delighted that Franklin students are more likely to gain good university degrees and more likely to be successful in securing employment than other sixth form college students nationally.

As a genuine Sixth Form College, (rather than a school-based sixth form or large Further Education College add-on) we are specialists, focussed entirely on sixth form provision. Our skills and effort goes in to supporting young people to make the transition from school to adulthood and to secure their future success. This means we provide a broad curriculum tailored to the needs of young people, taught by staff who are specialists in their subject area and supported by a whole college which is focussed on the phase of a young person’s life that spans leaving school to entering the world of higher education or work.

Our college campus on Chelmsford Avenue is spacious and well equipped to provide students with the range of experiences they need to develop their independence and prepare for their future, both educationally and in terms of wider enrichment. We also work closely with our community to provide for basic skills support in numeracy and literacy in community centres locally.

As a community-facing college, we welcome employers and representatives from a range of universities into the college to advise and support students on an almost daily basis. We also have strong relationships with charity and other local and national interest groups, all working together to ensure that the young people of North East Lincolnshire, Greater Lincolnshire and further afield, see a clear line of sight to their goals and aspirations. Our Franklin Professionals Programmes are designed to engage those young people who have the very highest and clearest aspirations; from the Grimsby Town FUTSAL Programme to our Career Academies in Logistics and Law for example.

We are also a founder member of the Venn Group, working in partnership with four other Sixth Form Colleges in our wider region (John Leggott, Wyke, Wilberforce and Scarborough). This group forms an engine for quality improvement and staff development in the area.

Each year, hundreds of students move on from Franklin College to take their next steps into the world. We always look forward to hearing about their progress and are very proud of all of our students’ achievements.
