Job overview

An exciting opportunity has now opened for an inspirational leader to join Astrea as the Principal of Highgate Academy, which is located in Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire.

Working with the Executive Principal and the Trust’s CEO, the Principal will be responsible for ensuring the educational success of the academy within the framework of their individual academies’ strategic plans. They will provide professional leadership and management and must establish a culture that promotes excellence, equality and high expectations of all pupils, whilst contributing to the success of all children within the Astrea family.

Highgate Academy is a 2-form primary set in the heart of the Dearne Valley community in Barnsley.  We have 350 children on roll, ranging from three to eleven years. Goldthorpe has recently benefited from regeneration programmes and investment, and as an academy we have worked tirelessly with families and partners to create a school where ‘Excellence and Enjoyment for all’ underpins everything we do.

Highgate is a high achieving academy. In 2018 we achieved 93% in reading, writing and maths. We are perfectly positioned to be Astrea’s first Outstanding academy.

We are an academy which provides our pupils with the best possible start in life, and helps them acquire the skills, knowledge and ambition to be effective members of a changing society. To do this we work hard to develop not just their academic ability, but the skills required to be successful life-long learners.  We work closely with the other 5 academies in our Hub; collaboratively working on projects and sharing expertise.

The successful candidate will be capable of working collaboratively with colleagues, parents and key stakeholders including the local authorities and Ofsted. If you are motivated by helping to create a culture of constant improvement, and if you are seeking to improve outcomes for young people then we would love to hear from you.

Astrea Academy Trust is committed to high quality professional development and career opportunities for all staff, we are also passionate about cultivating our own talented workforce. We have high hopes for our pupils, and this is expressed in our vision of “Making a Difference; To ourselves; To each other; To the World We Live In”. It’s important to us that children enjoy the time they spend here, but we also want them to achieve the very best they can. Our aim is to provide a learning experience that will help all children make rapid progress, whatever their starting point. We want to provide our children with the best possible start in life and help them acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding and ambition to prepare them for life beyond the classroom.

We want our academy to be a fun and exciting place where children thrive upon success. Ofsted recognised the school as ‘GOOD’ for the second time (October 2022). Inspectors praised Highgate as a safe, calm, and inclusive school place, where pupils are respectful, polite and leaders are ambitious for all their pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Pupils understand what the school value to ‘be respectful’ means, they listen to their teachers and are polite to staff throughout school, such as holding doors open for visitors. They remarked on how the school building is a calm and orderly place, in addition to how staff have:

  • Introduced a curriculum that clearly sets out what pupils need to know.
  • Minimised gaps in pupils’ knowledge due to COVID, teachers understand the importance of revisiting knowledge.
  • Prepared Nursery well for Reception, especially in phonics. In Reception, teachers are described as well trained to teach pupils to read.
  • Across the school, ensured pupils enjoy reading and borrow books from the library that they can continue to enjoy reading at home.
  • Outside the classroom, enabled all pupils to access the improved range of clubs and activities on offer that develop their interests.
