Job overview

The Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form is a vibrant, ambitious and inclusive 11-18 comprehensive Academy in Mirfield, West Yorkshire minutes from Junction 25 of the M62. The Academy is popular and oversubscribed with just over 1500 on roll, including 352 in the sixth form. It is on a large site that has been extended and modernised significantly in recent years and provides a purposeful, stimulating and engaging learning environment. The Sixth Form Centre is a unique facility which allows those students to have the adult feel, space, resources and responsibilities of a post-16 college. Governors are looking to appoint a new Principal with the ambition and skill set to build on The MFG’s many strengths and take it forward to even greater levels of success.

The MFG has a long and proud history but has always remained true to its strong traditions and values such as Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Aspiration. It is a vibrant learning environment with strong moral purpose and a simple mission statement 'To enable our students and staff to achieve their best'. The focus is on the students and how they can be inspired to achieve the very best for themselves academically and personally. The new Principal must share these values and ambitions.

The Academy has been through a period of significant positive transformation in recent years and whilst currently graded as ‘Requires Improvement’ there is a quiet confidence that it is moving securely towards a ‘Good’ judgement. Results and progress continue to improve and the new Principal will inherit a staff who lead by example and work hard to ensure that the young people feel happy, valued and secure, but equally they endeavor to enthuse them with a sense of aspiration, optimism and ambition. There is a collective commitment to improving standards and ensuring that high quality teaching and learning alongside a broad and balanced curriculum drives student progress. The new Principal will provide the leadership, energy, encouragement and challenge that will ensure the Academy can build on current achievements and move forward into an even more successful future.

This is an exciting time for the Academy which is also part of a small but aspirational Multi-Academy Trust along with Colne Valley High School and Marsden Junior School. The Academies work closely to provide mutual support and challenge at all levels and the Principal will work with the Executive Principal and colleagues from the other Academies to ensure they all continue to flourish.

If you are a dynamic and experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, this role offers you an outstanding opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. You must have a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available. You will be highly motivated and driven, having an in-depth knowledge of excellence in secondary education and a commitment to ensuring the highest quality of teaching and learning. You will have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change together with the focus and resilience to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will have a ‘can-do’ attitude that will motivate and engage students, staff and the wider community. Whilst displaying compassion, you will be skilled at holding staff to account and also be accustomed to personal accountability for student outcomes and all aspects of your work. Above all you will ensure that the young people, their learning and developing their potential remains at the heart of all decisions.
