Job overview

Students

There are two sisters aged 13 and 10.  They are polite children from an intelligent, kind and considerate family. Both girls are musical, with the elder passionate about the piano and the younger enjoying singing.  Both want to learn to play a woodwind instrument.

The eldest is a compassionate girl who loves everything about nature and animals.  She is artistic and is happy drawing.  She is good at communicating and is a pleasure to spend time with.  Her favourite teachers are energetic, fun and fair, knowledgeable and engaging. She likes to be pushed academically.

The younger girl can be a bit shy.  She has excelled academically and enjoys anything that challenges her intellectually. She has a range of interests and likes many different sports but is far from sporty.  She has a keen interest in science and has developed a love of baking.  She has a sharp entrepreneurial streak.

Role of the Tutor

This role calls for an extraordinary Tutor to work with the girls, ensuring a rounded education is delivered without adhering to a formal curricula or assessments.  The family have no set academic aspirations, however, the Tutor should focus on the girls’ mastery of their knowledge and skills to make sure that they are fully prepared if they ever want to go back into school or sit exams.  The Tutor will need to map projects against a British or American curriculum, but only using them as points of reference.

The Tutor must develop a rich, immersive curriculum with PBL at its core.  They must devise their projects from a wide range of areas, including the sciences, maths, music, coding, philosophy, theology, and basic economic systems.  The Tutor should inspire a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for problem-solving.

The family are aware that technological advances will be one of the biggest challenges to society and education over the years, and want to prepare the girls accordingly. The children should be technologically savvy, curious and adaptable to keep up with the advances in computing. TheTutor will also be partly responsible for the children’s character education.  The family is passionate about community service and social responsibility, so the Tutor should seek opportunities for volunteering wherever, incorporating these into their lessons.  The Tutor must ensure there is appropriate peer group social interaction for the girls.

The Tutor will travel with the family, taking advantage of each location and using local resources to highlight interesting aspects of the world.  They must not to pitch their lessons betweenthe abilities of the two girls but ensure that both students are stretched.  The Tutor must keep detailed records of all material covered and to what level.  Should the girls ever want tomove on to more structured study, this record-keeping will provide proof of their abilities, and clarity about where gaps are that might need to be addressed prior to such a move.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and inspiring.  They should be a natural communicator with a kind disposition, a good sense of humour and a firm-but-fair approach. They will be a qualified teacher with experience in curriculum planning that is centred in experiential PBL. Ideally they will have either Italian or Spanish, musical ability and play awoodwind instrument.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor will likelyspend six hours with the girls, five days each week– some periods individually and some together- with preparation time in addition.  Hours will usually be Monday-Friday, but there may be occasions when the Tutor will work weekends. The timetable must be established with reference to any extracurricular activities and travel arrangements, and be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected changes.

The Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week.  The Client will try to give the Tutor at least two weeks’ notice of when their ‘weekend’ will be, but the Tutor must understand this is not always possible.  The standard 45 working days vacation allowance applies to this contract with breaks taken at times convenient to the Client.

Accommodation

In South Africa, the Tutor will be provided with a self-contained, one-bedroom studio apartmentin Stellenbosch.  When traveling, the Tutor will be provided with furnished accommodation.  The rent, utilities and Internet on all accommodation will be covered by the Client.  While aboard a yacht, the Tutor will have theirown cabinand will be treated as family rather than a member of the crew.

Miscellaneous

The successful candidate will offer more than the minimum requirements of this position. They will be an excellent educator and role model: educated and polished, with superb manners and personal values.  The Tutor must ensure that they have the requisite travel and health insurance, required vaccinations and visas.

The Tutor should be a fit and healthy non-smoker.
