Bury Grammar School is currently looking to appoint a Teacher of Psychology

We are seeking to appoint, for September 2019, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Psychology Teacher to join an outward-looking and high achieving department. The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and willing to contribute to the wider life of the school. They should be able to teach this subject to KS5.

The Department

The Psychology Department at Bury Grammar School is a highly achieving department, that gains consistently outstanding A level results: in 2018 47% of students achieved A*/A and 90% A*/B. Psychology is one of the most popular A level choices within the Sixth Form and we inspire many students to continue with their Psychology studies at degree level. The Psychology Department plays an integral role within the Faculty of Social and Computer Sciences and it comprised of two full time members of staff including the Head of Department. The Department is responsible for the teaching of the A Level AQA Specification and has the sole use of two classrooms each of which has a PC and a multimedia projector. The Department has a strong team ethos and is continually striving to provide outstanding innovative teaching, which simultaneously stretches and supports all learners. Psychology A Level attracts large numbers of students and has an excellent reputation within the Sixth Form. We currently have three groups in Year 12 and three in Year 13. The Department also delivers extra-curricular clubs for pupils in lower years to introduce interested students to the subject, which are run by the Sixth Form Psychology Prefects. Members of the Department also contribute to student wellbeing through mindfulness meditation sessions and training pupils and staff in teaching, learning and meta cognitive practices to enhance their learning power. We also offer extra workshop sessions to give one-to-one support for students in their A Level study and to help prepare those who intend to study Psychology at university. As a department we are committed to enabling our students to benefit from the very best standards of teaching and are proud of our departmental culture of collaboration. At an exciting time for the growth of our department, we look forward to welcoming a dedicated and passionate teacher to our successful team.

It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
