Job overview

Oaks Park High School aims to provide a disciplined and ordered community in which all students, irrespective of ethnic or religious background, appearance, sexuality or ability, can learn and feel safe; where every member of the school feels valued and respected and all students are fairly and consistently treated. With this in mind we have the highest expectations of our students' behaviour.

The post holder will be expected to manage the Reflection Room and continue to offer guidance and support to students experiencing behaviour and emotional difficulties. The Reflection Room Mentor will work with the Pastoral Team to supervise students in the Inclusion room, promoting good behaviour and providing an inclusive environment where students are able to access support for their behaviour and undertake work.

The post holder will be required to work with students in addressing and supporting their behaviour in a one-to-one capacity to enable the students to talk through barriers to learning and devise strategies to enable them to return to lessons.  The Mentor will work with the Deputy Headteacher and Pastoral Leaders in coordinating interventions and behaviour plans for individual students that are communicated to staff and analysed for impact.

A key aspect of working in a school with children involves helping them to learn from their mistakes, take responsibility for their behaviour and to accept and learn from sanctions, so they are able to respect school rules and laws in society.

We are committed to supporting students in this, which will aid students who are experiencing behaviour and emotional difficulties. Our vision for this provision is to enable students to develop strategies to help them with these difficulties and allow them to overcome challenges they face at school and in the wider world.

The Reflection Room will be used as a safe and developmental isolation area where a small number of students can take the time with assistance to reflect on their behaviours and emotions to help them find a resolution to resolve and prevent further behaviour incidents.

We are therefore seeking to appoint an experienced and highly motivated individual to be responsible for the provision of guidance and support to students within the reflection room and monitor, evaluate and develop the effectiveness of this provision.

The successful candidate will have:

•Experience of working with students with behavioural and emotional difficulties

•The ability and willingness to understand the needs of students from different social backgrounds, sensory impairments and special educational needs

•The ability to inspire and motivate pupils with learning difficulties, or social, emotional, and mental health difficulties

•The ability to develop good working relationships with students who demonstrate challenging behaviour and maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with young people and adults

•The resilience to manage challenging situations and resolve behaviour incidents quickly

•Experience and awareness of the statutory safeguarding procedures  required in schools

•Excellent oral and written communication

•Good organisational and time management skills

•The ability to work constructively as part of a team

•Good ICT skills to support learning

•The ability and willingness to learn new skills. With a commitment to personal career development.
