Job overview
At the Department for Education, we’re committed to achieving world-class education, training and care for all. It’s about ensuring that every child, young person and adult has the chance to reach their potential. To make this possible, our immediate focus is on improving the performance of academies and free schools.
Creating more good school places for children is at the heart of Damian Hinds MP’s vision, our current Secretary of State for Education. As one of our Regional Schools Commissioners, you will be pivotal in delivering this vision. In return for making a tangible difference to the lives of thousands of children and young people, you’ll be entitled to excellent benefits like the Civil Service pension scheme, flexi-time and generous leave.
The role
It’s a role that represents an important shift in operational decision-making, from Whitehall to the regions. And it will give you the opportunity to make important decisions on behalf of the Secretary of State – from approving applications for academy status and new sponsors, to the creation of new multi academy trusts.
As our Regional Schools Commissioner, it will be your job to monitor performance, and both challenge and support underperforming academies and maintained schools. You will work to ensure that the sponsor market meets local need, and ensure a high quality provision for children, irrespective of their background, ability or needs. In this way, you will enable future generations able to play a key role in boosting social mobility.
You will offer insights from your region to advise Ministers, informing wider policy thinking and development. Your incredible support network will be an advisory Headteacher Board of outstanding academy principals and other leaders.
Requirements
If you’re already an outstanding education leader within the West Midlands region, we want to hear from you. You know the area and you know what’s right for local communities. With this, you bring a high level of drive, tenacity and resilience. And, you’re ready to lead the programme with energy, passion and skill.
Your track record commands respect. And you’ve got what it takes to influence change and improvement. As well as being adept at building relationships and understanding data, you’re someone who can accelerate performance, and oversee effective operations. You’ll quickly develop a strong understanding of the regional education landscape, and know exactly where improvement is needed.
