Description School Counsellors are employed by the Catholic Schools Office and are allocated to schools within the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle. Due to staff changes and school and team expansion there are a number of positions available within the school counselling team commencing Term 1 2022. These positions will be most likely allocated to schools within the All Saints and North regions but also could be elsewhere in the Diocese (https://www.mn.catholic.edu.au/schools/region-map/ ). These are ongoing positions.



Please note there are also a number of temporary 12 month positions available as well, these have been advertised separately and applicants who are interested in both permanent and temporary positions should respond separately to each advertisement. Applicants should clearly indicate whether they are interested in full or part time employment.
Position Requirements School Counsellors provide direct services to schools including educational and psychosocial assessments, psychological treatment and counselling, crisis support. School counsellors also provide advice and consultation to teachers, parents, guardians and other stakeholders. Finally, school counsellors support school policies and practices to improve student wellbeing within the community. School counsellors are an integral part of the school learning support team and help children and young people to achieve academic success, psychological health and wellbeing and social and emotional wellbeing.

Applicants must have a 4 year degree in psychology, social work or counselling (intern psychologists are welcome to apply). Supervision for intern psychologists may be able to be provided. Experience working with school-aged children is essential, and experience of working within schools will be highly regarded. Experience in working with students with disabilities would be an advantage.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to working within the Catholic ethos.

Essential Criteria • Minimum 4 year degree in psychology, social work or counselling. Psychologists must be registered with AHPRA & intern psychologists are welcome to apply

• Experience in assessment of psychological & educational needs and provision of evidence based counselling interventions for school aged students

• Experience in providing expert advice to schools on mental health, child & adolescent development, education and learning

• Clear understanding of, and respect for, the mission of Catholic schooling in the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle

• Demonstrated ability to build collaborative, respectful and productive relationships with key school and community partners

• Demonstrated knowledge of local community agencies including referral pathways

• Excellent organisational, communication and IT skills, current drivers licence

Conditions of EmploymentSalary will be as per the Catholic Schools Office Psychologists/Counsellors salary scale, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Catholic Schools Office (CSO), is responsible for the leadership, efficient operation and management of systemic schools which educate more than 18,000 students in 45 Primary schools, 10 Secondary schools and one K-12 school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
