The role of Lay Chaplain at the Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School is a highly valued role in a school which holds its mission to be “A Living Christian Experience” at its heart. Governors are therefore looking to recruit a committed and inspiring Lay Chaplain to support the faith lives of its students and staff. The person appointed will be faith-filled and enthusiastic in their commitment to inspire the whole school community to live out its Catholic mission and to ensure this mission permeates all aspects of school life.
The successful candidate will be a practising Catholic with a deep sense of faith commitment and have an approachable and friendly way of relating to young people, as well as having a strong commitment to Catholic education. The post demands personal qualities of self-motivation, empathy, enthusiasm and emotional resilience as the successful candidate will be supporting the planning of key liturgical celebrations, leading/supporting the school’s fundraising and charity work, working with the student Chaplaincy Teams and other student leadership groups who lead our diverse student body in the Catholic life of the school, as well as providing spiritual and pastoral support to the pupils and staff of the school.
The successful applicant will become part of a supportive and caring community where staff look after one another at all levels and in all posts. They will benefit from a comprehensive induction process, have a designated senior line manager and have access to staff well-being support. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to establish links across the many parishes, feeder primary schools and local charity groups connected to our school community as well as take an integral role in developing and leading on retreat and reflection opportunities.

The Saint John Henry Newman School is a popular 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive school in Stevenage, and is a member of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust. The school serves the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and as far south as Hatfield, with pupils from more than 25 different parishes. It has an excellent reputation; it is heavily oversubscribed and there are continuing interest lists for all year groups. The roll is currently approximately1600, including 400 in the Sixth Form. The school has benefitted from considerable investment in its buildings, including a new £3.5 million Sports and Performing block (The Pavilion) and a substantial new build programme that is due to be completed in July 2023.
Since its foundation in 1987, the school has developed a reputation for excellent educational standards combined with unique opportunities to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. This academic success has been acknowledged by the Department for Education, who have written to the school and acknowledged its excellent performance, commenting that The Saint John Henry Newman School is one of the top 90 schools in the country on one measure and in the top 100 schools in the country on another measure. In 2022/23 the students achieved:
- 86% GCSE English and Maths at 9-4
- 37% of all GCSE grades achieved were 9-7
- 56% A Level at A*, A and B.
- At A-level the pass rate for the last three years has been over 99%.
The Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School sees the quality of interpersonal relationships as the most significant factor in the provision of an outstanding education. Exam results, important though they are for opening doors for pupils in the future, do not determine success and happiness.
