Job overview

A School Nurse is required to work from the start of Trinity Term for three and a half days a week in a job share arrangement with an existing part-time School Nurse.  The post requires professionalism, commitment, initiative, common sense and the ability to work under pressure.  The School Nurse will be sympathetic and supportive to all members of the school community and will provide a holistic approach which includes health promotion, personal, social and health education (PSHE) and illness and injury assessment and treatment. 

The School Nurse should be a registered nurse, and have relevant post-registration experience.  Currently the usual working hours are 12.30 pm - 4.30 pm on Tuesdays (to provide an overlap with the job-share partner) and 8.15 am – 4.30 pm (including a 30-minute lunch break) on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, term-time only.

Responsibilities include:

  • providing care (including nursing care) for the general welfare of all pupils, providing treatment for minor ailments and sports injuries, and liaising with the local hospitals and   other agencies as necessary
  • giving personalised support and advice concerning relationships, stress management and risk-taking behaviours, and organising and running health and welfare clinics for pupils
  • providing a confidential counselling and advice service as appropriate in conjunction with the Deputy Head, Head of Boarding and other pastoral staff 
  • meeting regularly (and not less than once every half term) with the Deputy Head and School Counsellor to review the service and referrals that have been made
  • helping all pupils, including those with complex health needs, to ensure that they receive the support, care and treatment needed for them to manage their school commitments as successfully as possible
  • liaising with the Head of Boarding and other members of the boarding team, and liaising with parents, teaching staff and administrative, catering and domestic staff, to ensure seamless, continuous and effective care of boarders  
  • registering all boarding pupils with the School Doctor at the local Health Centre
  • arranging medical, dental and other appointments for boarders and accompanying these  pupils to appointments
  • liaising with staff to safeguard pupils at risk or suffering from child maltreatment
  • liaising with parents and specialist teams where necessary to develop in-school care plans for pupils with complex needs and or long-term needs
  • helping with the development and delivery of the health-related curriculum, including timetabled PSHE classes
  • providing training and advice for teachers and other staff on specific health needs and issues
  • safe storage and administration of authorised medicines and treatments as necessary following drug protocols
  • arranging for day and boarding pupils to be taken to Accident and Emergency when necessary
  • notifying parents when a day pupil is in sick bay or in need of going home
  • arrangements for all necessary vaccinations for boarding pupils travelling abroad, ensuring that they have sufficient medicines/treatments to carry them through the holidays (malaria tablets etc)
  • arranging immunisations as required
  • liaising with School Nurse Team
  • providing advice for staff concerning pupils’ allergies, special medical needs and treatments and arranging appropriate care for pupils with allergies and special medical needs 
  • undertaking regular First Aid training, maintaining First Aid boxes and administering First Aid as needed to both pupils and staff
  • providing treatment for staff for minor ailments and injuries 
  • occasionally offering advice out of hours in an emergency
  • arranging First Aid training for staff as required and maintaining training records
  • providing First Aid at major school events held outside normal working hours
  • maintaining accurate, confidential and detailed records
  • involvement in child protection issues
  • arranging for the control of infectious diseases, including emergency planning and liaison with the local Health Authority as appropriate
  • managing the Health Centre budget
  • producing and implementing annual development plan for inclusion within the whole-school development plan and conducting an annual department review

Person specification

  • registered nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Pay and benefits

The annual salary for the post is £19,021.95 based on 27.25 hours a week for a 35 week year (term time only) which is pro-rata the full-time salary of £26,177 based on 37.5 hours a week for a 35 week year.

At specified times, staff may use the School’s Fitness Suite, and during Trinity Term staff may use the swimming pool at the advertised times.  Refreshments are provided in the Staff Room at morning break and teatime, and lunch is available in the dining room.  There is car parking on site, and the School is easily accessible by bus.  

All salaried staff, full or part-time, are entitled to a fee remission, 50% for full-time staff and pro rata for part-time staff.
