This post requires a highly organised person to assist the Science departments with their heavy technician demands. The successful candidate will ideally have a specialism in Physics and be able to support the Biology and Chemistry departments if required.

The post commences mid – late September 2018.

Purpose of the post

To assist staff and students in supporting practical work across the Science curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist with the preparation and delivery of appropriate equipment and materials to the laboratories and teaching rooms, in support of the teaching staff.

2. Recovery and cleaning of the equipment and materials.

3. Assist with the checking and routine maintenance of equipment.

4. Assist in the preparation of materials for individual student projects.

5. Making basic apparatus as directed.

6. Purchase of perishable items as requested by teaching staff.

7. Test new practicals for teaching staff as directed.

8. Liaison with the relevant technicians or Head of Department concerning health and safety aspects of practical work carried out by the Department.

9. Development of new equipment and experiments if possible.

10. Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be requested by management, commensurate with the post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

1. Previous background experience in a science environment.

2. The ability to work in co-operation with colleagues and to be flexible

3. Ability to act on own initiative and cope under pressure.

Desirable Criteria

1. Experience in an educational environment

2. AS/A levels or equivalent qualifications in a science subject, ideally Physics.

3. Familiarity with Health & Safety and COSH guidelines.

About Sixth Form College Colchester

The Sixth Form College Colchester is a non-denominational, mixed sixth-form college for around 3,200 students aged 16 and older. It was founded in 1987 and is located on the site of a former school. The old building at the college dates back to 1912. 

In 2011, the Sixth Form College Colchester opened a new language centre; a series of new buildings, including a performing arts centre, have been added in recent years. Among its alumni are television presenter Dermot O’Leary and Blur frontman Damon Albarn.
