Science Technician (Term Time Only)

We are looking to appoint a Science Technician to join our secondary team from September 2019. The ideal candidate will be able to provide comprehensive technician support across the Research & Design Faculty to support high quality teaching and learning. We are looking for someone who is organised, flexible, reliable and a good team player. Previous school experience would be an advantage.

The position will involve:

Preparation of science materials and equipment

  • Collecting apparatus and chemicals from storage
  • Making up standard laboratory solutions within Health and Safety guidelines
  • Maintaining apparatus in a usable state and undertaking minor repairs where feasible
  • Checking individual components in and out for class use
  • Preparing experiments, setting up apparatus and equipment for demonstrations and practical lessons as requested by teaching staff
  • Assisting teaching staff and students in practical work when required
  • Complete practical demonstrations for students in lessons
  • Support in the delivery of STEM activities

Health and Safety

  • To be familiar with and advise on the Health and Safety implications of all laboratory techniques and chemicals used
  • Carry out risk assessments for practical activities
  • Disposing of waste materials according to health and safety regulations
  • Cleaning of spillages according to health and safety guidelines
  • Advising staff of any problems, including safety aspects

Stock control and routine maintenance of science laboratories and preparation rooms,their equipment and services 

  • Liaising with staff over use of equipment and stock
  • Servicing equipment and repairing damages or arranging for this to be done
  • Purchase of sundries
  • Maintaining laboratory clean and tidy in conjunction with the teacher in charge of the room
  • Cleaning the sinks, chemicals on bench tops, spillages of chemicals on floor
  • Storing materials tidily
  • Keeping equipment clean
  • Looking after animals, insects and plants kept by the department
  • Cleaning of goggles
  • Cleaning of safety screens, fume cupboards and other items
  • Carrying out safety checks on equipment, e.g. Bunsen tubing etc
  • Taking stock of chemicals, consumables, stationery, books and breakable items and ordering of these items
  • Advise Head of Faculty on stock replacement needs
  • Checking deliveries

The successful candidate should be willing to be actively involved in all practical aspects of science, including demonstrations and lessons.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum A Level of equivalent in Chemistry (preferred) and/or Biology 
  • Experience of working in a school or industrial laboratory
  • Relevant COSHH training

About St Mary Magdalene C of E School

St Mary Magdalene C of E School is a co-educational, all-through school based in Greenwich, south-east London. The school has both primary and secondary phases. The secondary phase has approximately 560 students aged 11-18 and 80 staff. 

St Mary Magdalene C of E School is part of the wider Koinonia Federation – a federation of two schools located over four sites that work together as one team. Facilities include a sports hall, library, science labs, drama and dance studio.  Religious Studies, the school's specialism, is a central element of the curriculum. Extra-curricular activities include sports, food technology, STEM club and Bible Club, which all students can attend.

St Mary Magdalene C of E School aims to teach pupils to treat others as they would expect to be treated. The pastoral structure of the school ensures that every student is known individually. Children are provided with opportunities to develop their mentoring and leadership skills. The school specialises in Religious Studies and collective worship is a key part of each school day. Teachers intend collective worship, which is led by senior leaders or the School Chaplain, to be a creative and responsive time that follows the Anglican calendar and also acknowledges the key dates of other faiths.    

Inspections

St Mary Magdalene All Through School was inspected by SIAMS in 2018 and was graded Outstanding in all areas.  It was also inspected by Ofsted in 2018 and was graded GOOD in all areas.
