Due to internal promotions, departmental restructuring and continual growth of our 6th Form, The Bishop of Winchester Academy is seeking a proactive, adaptable and passionate English specialist to join our school as a Second for the English department.

This is an exciting opportunity to support an experienced Head of English in developing and implementing departmental strategies to nurture our students’ literary passion. Whatever your career stage, you will be supported to develop further literary knowledge and to enhance your teaching tool kit, so that our students are able to excel as both writers and linguists.

Our Head of English would be delighted to take you on a tour of the school and give you the opportunity to meet the department and answer any questions you may have.

The Bishop of Winchester Academy is a thriving Church of England school, recognised by Ofsted as ‘improving the life chances of all [our] pupils’, and offering an ‘outstanding curriculum’ pioneered by ‘outstanding leadership’ (May 2017). As Second in English, you will join an established team of creative professionals to:    

  • Play a fundamental role in helping to move the English department to the next stage in its development    
  • Plan and deliver high quality and engaging lessons that will challenge students and inspire progression  
  • Encourage students to have high expectations of themselves and their behaviour    
  • Be able to teach  GCSE and A-Level 
  • Be a positive role model and supportive mentor to students


The post offers ample opportunities for an ambitious teacher to develop their skills, in addition to:

• A bespoke CPD programme including training and in department development time

• Excellent teaching facilities including brand new interactive smart boards

• A robust behaviour system allowing teaching staff to deliver high quality learning opportunities to students

• School site in close proximity to beaches and the Jurassic Coast

About The Bishop of Winchester Academy

The Bishop of Winchester Academy, based in Bournemouth, Dorset, is a Church of England secondary school that prides itself on its curriculum, governance and outstanding student behaviour. Students aged 11-18 experience teaching in new state-of-the-art buildings and have first-class resources at their fingertips. The school operates in an area where there are schools that select for entry on grounds of ability.

The mixed secondary school was opened in September 2010 as a sponsor-led academy. In September 2014, the Bishop of Winchester Academy extended its educational opportunities by opening its own sixth form.
