Do you want to join the management of a very strong academic team, teaching English to motivated pupils with high aspirations?

In this role, you will support the Head of English in the general running of the department and in the formation of department policy and also lead the co-ordination of Y6-9 in relation to English teaching and learning. Your key responsibilities will include deputising for the Head of English in her absence and supporting with a range of department management tasks as well as taking responsibility for co-ordination of one of the key stages and delivering excellence in teaching.

The role would suit an experienced teacher who can deliver enthusiastic and engaging English literature and language teaching, inspiring our pupils to fulfil their potential.

We expect all staff to undertake a pastoral role as a form tutor, and to get involved in the wider life of the school through its trips, co-curricular activities and outreach programmes. You can find more detailed information about a role within the school in our 'Working at Emanuel' guide.

English is one of the strongest departments at Emanuel. There is a very good take up by students at A Level and our recent results in the public examinations are excellent. We are a thriving and happy department and we hold a high profile within the school.

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
