Job overview

Secondary Teaching Assistant

The Wenlock School

£16,000 - £18,000

As part of our continued growth, we now have a fantastic opportunity for a Secondary Teaching Assistant to join our close-knit team at The Wenlock School.  If you are looking to join a dedicated team in a school that will welcome your ideas and re-engage our young people, we would like to hear from you.

The Wenlock School opened in September 2018. We are a co-educational day school catering for pupils aged 7-18 with a range of needs including a range of social, emotional and mental health needs and also pupils who have been diagnosed with autism or demonstrate behaviours associated with autism. You will support our teachers to deliver the Curriculum and contribute to making Wenlock School an Outstanding provision and a leading light for our young people and their families. We provide a therapeutic, supportive and inclusive learning environment and are committed to raising achievement and enabling pupils to recognise their potential and supporting them through a personalised, engaging curriculum. Our priority is to develop the foundation knowledge and skills required to make a manageable and smooth transition to the next life stage.

About the role

Working as a Teaching Assistant at The Wenlock School you will enhance the Secondary learning environment for our pupils, supporting our teachers to promote personal development and well-being for all. You will help setup the classrooms, lead on small parts of lessons, keep accurate records to track pupil progress and contribute to lesson planning. It is essential you are aware of pupil progress and able to flag potential concerns. Safeguarding the welfare of the young people in our care will be your Secondary responsibility.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an individual with high expectations and standards who can offer excellent supportive skills. You will be working with young people who have complex needs and your ability to develop trusting relationships with the young people and staff will be crucial. You will be able to reliably work to instruction as well as take the initiative when circumstances demand. An interest in teaching and a desire to improve these pupils’ lives is essential.

The ability to contribute to the development of our outstanding school is essential and we believe that energy, passion and a commitment to high standards are key characteristics required.  We are looking for a special individual who is able to help inspire and re-engage the young people that we serve.  This is an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their skills and experience in a challenging, motivating and highly rewarding environment. Previous experience of working in a SEN environment would be desirable, excellent support skills and the right motivation, personal qualities and levels of resilience are also just as important.

This position is due to commence in January 2020 or earlier (subject to approved reference/DBS checks).

Applications are invited online through the Acorn Care and Education website www.acorncare.co.uk  If you have any further queries regarding how to apply please contact the Headteacher, Gemma Mann

Closing Date: Wednesday 16th October 2019

Welcome to The Wenlock School

 The Wenlock School

The Wenlock School offers an outstanding and therapeutic educational approach with a staff team dedicated and determined to support every individual. Our custom built school has been designed with specialised facilities, creating a unique environment, which will help our learners re-engage with their education supported by a personalised and purposeful curriculum. We will also embrace a raft of initiatives with personalised targets to ensure every child can make excellent progress, appropriate to their specific needs.  Many children come to us with very complex needs, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviour. We always look beyond the issues and potential barriers to learning and recognise the innate potential within. We invest time with each individual child to recognise and understand their learning needs so that we can put in place the right support package. Our expectations are very high for both behaviour and achievement, because we know that we can help children make much more progress than they would within a mainstream school environment
