Job overview

About the role: Milestone Academy are seeking to appoint an English Lead Teacher for Phase 1 and 2 to join us in September 2020. As the English Lead, you will take responsibility for this subject area, supporting, developing and reviewing the English Curriculum within the two phases. We are looking for someone with drive, ambition and a true passion for their subject area.  This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join a consistently Outstanding SEN academy!

Working with us at Milestone Academy: Milestone Academy is a consistently outstanding special school (Ofsted 2011, 2016 and 2019) catering for 360 pupils between the ages of 2 and 19 years with profound, severe and complex learning needs including physical, medical and/or sensory needs. Evidence of our relentless pursuit of continuous improvement is delivered via our Ofsted Report (2019).

Milestone Academy is a significantly large special school complete with the formation since 2015 of three satellites provisions based in fellow LAT mainstream academies. Despite this size, each individual pupil from aged 2 -19 wholeheartedly matters to us as do their destinations when our pupils leave Milestone Academy for their life in modern Britain.

Milestone Academy’s philosophy is wrapped around the Principal’s challenge for staff to relentlessly pursue the quality delivery of our Core Moral Purpose. We absolutely believe our families should expect pupils in our care to make progress over time, no matter how small these steps sometimes are.

To ensure there is a sense of belonging for our pupils and staff, the Principal has applied the notions of distributing leadership and delegating authority. This approach sees the academy based in four Phases (up to 100 pupils and 45 staff), each of whom are led by an Assistant Principal who is supported by a Phase Leader (equivalent to a Key Stage Leader) and Behaviour Lead. Each Phase reports into the Vice Principal. Three of the Phases have satellite provisions attached to them. In turn, we experience regular support and well-apportioned challenge from LAT via the COO, ensuring we strive to keep ‘on top of our game’.

Whilst we are an active member of our parent group, Leigh Academies Trust, we also enjoy being a partner school of Kent Special Education Needs Schools Trust and take a national perspective on SEN and PSCN via our chosen membership of Challenge Partners group.

Being part of Leigh Academies Trust: As of January 2020, our Trust is comprised of 25 geographically organised academies (11 secondaries, 13 primaries and 1 special) educating over 15,000 students, and employing over 2,500 talented staff. We also have three further academies in development phase, due to open between September 2020-2021. The Trust is establishing four ‘clusters’ of academies: North West Kent; Central Kent; South East London; Medway. In addition, the Trust is responsible for one of the region’s biggest initial teaching training providers and a large teaching school.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust, you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with your peers both within the academy and across the whole Trust. This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together. You are supported to undertake regular self-development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organization.

We strive to offer a range of benefits that all employees can take advantage of which we regularly review and add to - click here to view what you’d receive as a member of staff with Leigh Academies Trust.

Diversity at our core: As a Trust, we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of age, gender, race, beliefs or disabilities which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise.

The academy is committed to safeguarding children, and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check. Our commitment to safeguarding is underpinned by robust processes and checks which are in place across the Trust.

Recruitment and hiring during COVID-19:  Despite the challenges we face, recruitment and hiring will continue for all Leigh Academies Trust vacancies with as little disruption as possible over the coming weeks and months.  This is for all senior, teaching and support staff appointments.  Applications will still be reviewed and interviews conducted in a timely manner, although interview activities will vary.  If you have any queries or concerns, please get in touch with the LAT Talent Team - talent@latrust.org.uk.

Welcome to Milestone Academy, part of Leigh Academies Trust. We are a proud school serving students aged 2-19 with Special Educational Needs. Each day our students bring their own unique energy into their school. In turn we ensure that they receive a high quality educational provision delivered through the immensely capable and effective hands of our staff.

The site itself presents a safe and welcoming environment with students placed in one of four settings:

  • Nursery
  • Primary
  • Secondary: Key Stage 3 and 14-19 years

We recognise that adopting a personalised approach is a critical key for each student’s development. Therefore we invest a significant amount of time assessing the student’s needs – an assessment that ensures we respond in the most specific manner. This approach is repeated throughout their time with us.

Personal independence is quite rightly an aim for each of our students. Therefore, in and out of classrooms we pride ourselves in adopting an approach that accelerates the development of life skills and enhances communication techniques. In parallel, we ensure that each student is taught the appropriate national curriculum subjects, as well as literacy and numeracy skills.

We may well be one of the largest schools of its type in England but rest assured that each student is extremely well known by the adults in their class. The appropriate mix of safety, care and challenge is delivered to each student, every single day that they attend Milestone Academy.

Principal: Sarah Goosani

  • Provide expertise to deliver a personalised curriculum for each pupil’s learning
  • Work together with families and other agencies to ensure every pupil is valued, challenged and supported
  • Have the highest expectation that every pupil will make sustained academic and personal progress
